Police have accused a 24-year-old man of slaying an Elsik High School sophomore in a shooting that wounded two others following a family feud, according to court records.
Houston police investigators believe Kenny Garrett shot and killed 16-year-old Mareja Pratt during an Oct. 26 clash in the 10800 block of Sharpview Drive where her sister had arranged to fight their cousin over social media posts, records show. Family members initially said that another relative had threatened to hurt Mareja following months of online harassment.
Garrett was charged Thursday with murder and two counts of aggravated assault following the shooting. As of Sunday morning, he has not been apprehended.
Court records identified the feuding relatives as Mareja’s sister, Dekambrie Pratt, and a cousin. Pratt, wounded in the shooting, outlined the fight to Houston police investigators while recovering at a hospital.
The cousins had arranged to fight that afternoon in a park near the Wilcrest Baptist Church, police said.
Mareja joined her older sister and 32-year-old Anthony Thornabar for the fight, while her cousin showed up with two friends, one of whom brought Garrett — her boyfriend.
The cousin, who does not face charges at this time, shouted a warning during the fight: ‘Ya’ll (sic) better watch out, ya’ll (sic) better watch out.”
Pratt said she then heard gunfire and started running away. She saw Mareja stumble to the ground after being shot in the back, while she was then hit in her left side. Firefighters pronounced Mareja dead at the scene.
Police found surveillance footage from a nearby home that showed Garrett stepping out of his vehicle near the gathering teens and opening fire. Garrett then chased after the Pratt sisters before running back to his car, according to the video. He left the fight with the cousin and two others.
Meanwhile, Pratt and Thornabar were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening gunshot wounds.
The three who left with Garrett later identified him to investigators as the shooter, according to court records. Garrett has been convicted of two drug-related charges — both misdemeanors — since 2017.
Kira Walton, another cousin to the Pratts, earlier said the Elsik student joined her older sister to help diffuse the fight.
“She was a loving, sweet girl,” Walton said. “She wouldn’t hurt nobody. She loved to go to school. She was just focused. She had her whole life ahead of her.”

Thoughts? As of this posting date (11/2/2020), Garrett still shows as having a warrant/still not in custody according to a search of Harris County's online criminal court records: www.hcdistrictclerk.com/edocs/public/CaseDetails.aspx?Get=PACJJYyIVYxi92fUNe9rRpd7hanl9E/XPVPptQ0BZWx6EfN3HhaUYvC4p4MGKdy5A1jqsJvXuXwmSMJfaSYNOKBUJb+6zPiQVHXbXLHQoSSaNTiceHpTkzaU1JYOzMmA8t6ooC12LaU3JXF+Di1ZXIAthe7rmU7mIoIbD21gYkRttBQ5JpnIeg==
Also, articles don't give a specific number to call for tips, so I assume for now if you know Garrett's whereabouts, you can contact your local police or crime stoppers or since this is a Houston case I assume you can also anonymously contact Houston Crime Stoppers: crime-stoppers.org/
Also, this is one of the most senseless crimes of 2020 if you ask me. A social media beef, ESPECIALLY involving family members, should have not lead to a teenage girl's death. This was completely unnecessary violence that could have been settled by talking rather than fists or guns.
