She had been strangled to death. Elena was trying to terminate the relationship with her abusive boyfriend, Fredy Bustamante. The apartment building where her body was discovered was actually the location where Fredy also lived. Fredy was immediately charged in connection with Elena's murder. He is believed to have initially fled to Guatemala. -- Thoughts? As of today, August 30, 2020, the federal Unlawful Flight to Avoid Prosecution case against Fredy Bustamante shows no movement in PACER since it was issued in 1998. Therefore we know for sure that he's still at large. The most recent online posting I saw that mentioned his fugitive status was in 2015 which is better than a lot of other cold case fugitives. If Fredy is still in Guatemala, then at least that country has gotten better with finding and extraditing fugitives wanted out of the US. patch.com/new-jersey/fortlee/fugitive-indicted-in-englewood-killing-5cb60cadweb.archive.org/web/20150911231620/http://www.bcpo.net/go.php?display_id=70&fugitive=bustamante_fredy#bustamante_fredy

One thing I do wonder, If they said they believed he initially fled to Guatemala does that mean they thought he was there but it turned out to not be unconfirmed or unverified or did investigators simply assume he was there the whole time, based on where he or his relatives are from?

Good point. Now you're making me remember if I actually read the word "initially" mentioned in regards to Fredy fleeing to Guatemala or if that's just a word I came up with when I typed up this thread. Sorry if that seemed to be confusing. Anyway, the 2012 Patch article specifies he "may" have fled to Guatemala. If that's true, there is always the possibility he could have returned to the US at some point. We have seen that happen before numerous times.

Given the passage of time, I think he’s likely in Guatemala only because he’s more secure over there, whereas coming to the U.S. will increase his chances of getting caught. It does happen when individuals return to the U.S., but right now I can assume he’s in Guatemala.
