First off this thread is not meant as disrespect to The Hunt, it's already working and is like a new version of America's Most Wanted. But one thing we forget is the whole reason AMW was cancelled by Fox in 2011 and then Lifetime in 2013 in the first place was NOT ratings- it was money. Fox deemed it too expensive in 2011, and then increased the license fees so much Lifetime could not afford to pay it and cancelled the show as well two years later. (The ratings were not gang busters on Lifetime, but the show still increased their Friday night ratings by 50% compared to the year before. I think we all know if Fox didn't up the fees, The Hunt would have never happened- for better or worse.)
The Hunt is a success so far and although John Walsh is no longer involved with AMW, in my opinion, along with the overall interest in crime on cable tv with channels like ID and TLC pretty much dedicated to true-crime, it may inspire Fox to bring AMW back or another network to bring it back and pay the license fees. It of course would likely have a new host. AMW was produced by John Walsh's Production Company so I'd have no idea if Walsh would still be involved in that aspect or if a new team would come. Unsolved Mysteries was eventually brought back. Even though the episodes technically weren't new, the segments were re-told through a new host as Dennis Farina technically replaced Robert Stack. I am assuming they wouldn't just re-hash AMW segments and would air new cases.
What are your thoughts? Would you still watch AMW despite loving The Hunt? For me as the site admin I would pretty much have no choice as it's pretty much my "job" now to cover fugitive cases covered on tv. But as far as actually looking forward to the show I loved so much through my youth, a lot would depend on the host. For instance, God forbid it was Nancy Grace I'd have to put the tv on mute and just hope I can still follow what's going on. But Elizabeth Smart or a former AMW correspondent would add credibility. I also think David Rose, the guy who hosts Washington's Most Wanted would make a great host. I was hooked on AMW and was devastated when they were unable to shop it to a new network after Lifetime, but time heals all wounds. I hate to say this, I don't miss AMW as much anymore now that we have The Hunt, but I would still welcome it back with open arms if done right.
There's also the question of whether The Hunt and AMW would be competition. We see some former staff members of AMW now at The Hunt and I assume you can only work on so many shows before you want some free time for yourself. I wonder if a fugitive is captured that was aired on both shows if there'd be an argument over who gets credit for their capture.
My personal feeling is AMW and now The Hunt was and is a court of last resort and victims need as many resources as possible to get their case out to the public. Two fugitive chasing shows means even more bad guys getting caught. And if a new show came along that wasn't AMW or The Hunt that also profiled fugitives that would be great too.
Anyway what are your thoughts? Would you still watch AMW and what do you think would happen as a result if both The Hunt and AMW with a new host and/or team was on the air?
