Norma Mae Baker has been at large for over 30 years after escaping from a Detroit prison. She was first aired on AMW in 1990, however I don't know when her last profile was. In 1977, Baker hired Norman Richardson to kill her husband Jim in order to collect on two life insurance policies and to gain full ownership of a bar they both owned. In May 1977, Norman murdered Jim and his brother. Eventually, Norman was arrested and ratted Baker out and she went to prison as well. For whatever reason, Baker was given trustee status, which allowed her to do work outside of her cell, which was normally used for low-risk prisoners that were close to being released. One day in 1981, Baker was working on outside garbage detail when she ran off down the street and fled in an awaiting car. She has been on the run ever since. -- Thoughts? Baker would be 86-years old by now (according to the AMW Playing Cards site) so there's a good chance that she's now dead. If that's the case then it would be interesting to learn whatever happened to her. The site mentioned she may have fled to Chicago or Canada, and a 1991 magazine article on female fugitives wanted by the FBI mentioned she was loaded with cash. Regarding the trustee status, five officials at the prison were facing disciplinary action, but were any of them paid off by Baker or someone close to her? books.google.ca/books?id=xvQDAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA2&lpg=PA2&dq=Norma+Mae+Baker&source=bl&ots=MrurrDZ9rL&sig=pRvoWtdmUrNEf-aOtLiofD8NeBs&hl=en&sa=X&ei=qFfeU73oKs6lyAS9xIGYAw&ved=0CEkQ6AEwDA#v=onepage&q=Norma%20Mae%20Baker&f=falsenews.google.com/newspapers?nid=110&dat=19810409&id=koxkAAAAIBAJ&sjid=5UsDAAAAIBAJ&pg=4189,794581 UPDATE from site admin: As of July 26th, 2018, Baker still has a W (Warrant Flag) in Detroit's online criminal court case records search: cmspublic.3rdcc.org/CaseDetail.aspx?CaseID=202707Admin Note #1: If you have any information on this case, based on the agency's past handling of the case, our advice would be to contact your nearest FBI field office or embassy or submit a web tip at tips.fbi.govAdmin Note #2: If you have any news-related updates on this case, please contact us here: amwfans.com/thread/1662/website-contact-form

Yet another case I would have assumed we covered already if I didn't see it on the forum today!
86 is old, but if she had money she may have received good medical care. I also don't seem to see anything about bad health habits such as smoking. I wouldn't be shocked if she was still alive. The problem is, the day she does die, will it be known it was her?

Awhile back, I remember I scoured the Doe Network and other unidentified Jane/John Doe sites to see if any of the bodies matched known fugitives AMW had profiled. Never did find anybody that came close, but if a fugitive died without people knowing that's probably the only way we'll know for sure.
What's interesting about Baker is that I could have sworn AMW aired her sometime from 1998 onward, but I never found her on amw.com. That means, at the latest, she was profiled sometime before November 1998.

I really, really wish there was a larger push by long-time AMW fans to make a record of all the cases from the early years that are still unresolved, and if possible, when they were last profiled. Even Unsolved Mysteries has an extremely detailed fan-made wiki with listings of pretty much all their cases (as well as episodes and who was on each one) so why has there never been an AMW one?

Me too. I'm proud of the work we've done of covering the cases we're aware of, but there's probably really old cases that even we're not aware of that older posters could be helpful with. Does anyone have catchemall's e-mail still? He'd be great for this site. What I would have to do is the following. Web.archive.org the amw.com site, see if I can still access the old forum, see if I can find his profile and then see if I would be able to even e-mail him. I'll go do that right now!

Okay web.archive.org isn't letting me access the old amw.com forums so I think we're out of luck there sadly. The best I think we can do is promote the discussion idea on the forums facebook page and similar sites (as long as it doesn't get too spam-like).

That surprises me. With a UFAC warrant, it’s not like their case is going to die because she already had been convicted of murder. Plus, generally (in nearly every State), if a person escapes during the pendency of their appeal, the appeal is usually dismissed, so it’s not like she was going anywhere if captured again.

Norma Mae Baker was profiled on AMW on 6/21/91. Attached are images of a forensic age-enhanced bust of what she likely looked like after a decade, and a photo of John Walsh with the bust.
Some quirks of hers that were discussed:
1) Had a notoriously bad cussing habit; 2) Heavy drinker, and she could drink quite a bit without becoming heavily intoxicated; 3) Heavy gambler; 4) Described as having a "tough" personality.
