(Above: Taylor in 1960s or 1970s. Photo Credit: Patch.com via Jefferson County (Colorado) Sheriff's Office) From Lakewood Patch: DNA testing has identified a suspect wanted in connection with a Colorado murder case that is over half a century old, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office announced Thursday. On Aug. 19, 1963, Margaret "Peggy" Beck was found dead in her Girl Scouts camp at the Flying G Ranch near Deckers, around 50 miles southwest of Denver. The 16-year-old had been sexually assaulted and strangled. Beck was sharing her tent with another girl, but she had gone to the camp's infirmary. Police interviewed others at the camp, but they did not remember hearing or seeing anything suspicious. The identity of Beck's attacker has remained unknown for decades. Investigators used genealogy testing to identify a suspect — James Raymond Taylor — using DNA taken from under Beck's fingernails, officials said on Thursday. He's not been seen since 1976, and his whereabouts are unknown, according to the sheriff's office. Anyone with information is asked to call the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office tip line at 303-271-5612 or Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867, and reference case 63-10335.patch.com/colorado/lakewood-co/dna-testing-identifies-suspect-1963-colorado-murder-caseThoughts? Based on the above article's posting date, Taylor was still being sought at least as of April 23rd, 2020. I put 2020 instead of 1963 as the wanted year since the warrant was just issued thanks to the incredible forensic breakthrough. And yes, Taylor would now be 81-years-old but the Golden State Killer turned out to be alive after all when that case was finally solved. Regardless, although we now know who police believe killed Peggy Beck, it would be great to also find out what happened to Taylor- dead or alive- to help Peggy's surviving family get some final answers. This is a case in a category of its own, the fact that he’s raised no suspicions on himself from 1963 it’s incredible (not in a good way), for him to fall off the radar in 1976 could mean he cut ties with everyone or started to travel from place to place or may have fled to another country. The thing is this case is extremely recent (arrest warrant issued yesterday) and he’s probably not causing any attention to himself after 44 years of hiding and living at an age that makes him having fit into the community unsuspectingly.

Very good points. I have a feeling this is a case that may be solved through a lot of good detective work- keep digging and digging.

With someone like say Brad Bishop, his photograph has been plastered for almost half a century and everyone is looking for an old man with a cleft chin. With Taylor it’s different because he’s already become apart of society and with the images of him from the 1960s/1970s, it would be pretty difficult to pinpoint his tracks after Las Vegas in 1976 and to jog people’s memory because the people who may have known him while on the run are either more than likely deceased due to the passage of time, or don’t know him by his name used in the warrant, also he picked the right location and the right era to vanish because for all we know Taylor could be in a neighboring state or still in Nevada, the American Southwest is less dense than say the northeast. Also the 70s there wasn’t a lot of technology available, so going on the run was easier than it is in 2020.

I think there actually is a good chance of Taylor being alive because he wasn't on the run per se- he didn't have to technically worry because no one knew back then he was a killer.
I think I should expand that by detective work I feel that continuing to dig on social security records addresses etc... possible relatives etc... is what will probably solve this case. But I still feel expanding publicity to the general public can help as well.

Anyone else reminded of Guadalupe Gonzalez Jimenez from the similar circumstances between the cases?
James Taylor would be in his early 80s if still alive, but at the very least we have a suspect's name attached to this horrible case. There have been a few examples in the past couple of years of fugitives in their early 80s being apprehended after decades on the run. Therefore, we may have a chance of locating James Taylor alive.
