Vernon may have planned the crime in advance and stashed supplies in the woods near his home to help him survive on the run. His vehicle has never been located. I'm a bit skeptical that his family is protecting him. In one of Henry's profiles, the lead detective said his brothers were actually cooperative with police and told them a number of places where he might have fled.
At the same time, I'm not terribly surprised that Henry is still at large. He was known to be a trained survivalist and had anti-government views. The Mountain West (Idaho, Wyoming, Montana) has tons of places to hide, and he could very easily be living off the land somewhere in that area.

In one of Henry's profiles, the lead detective said his brothers were actually cooperative with police and told them a number of places where he might have fled. With that taken into account, I'm curious as to why AMW.com mentioned Vernon having family in certain rural states. Maybe the site was incorrect or something.

That was a pretty interesting article. I knew he was an upholsterer (it was mentioned in his AMW profile) but the fact the was a backhoe operator is new to me. It really seems like not even the detective has a clue as to where Henry ran off to.
Also interesting that he was referred to as "Vern Henry" in the article and not "Vernon Henry." I do know that in his December 2002, the detective at one point says, "We believe Vern came in this way," which tells me that he probably went by the nickname "Vern."

I have a feeling this guy is dead. Just given his personality and hatred towards the government and members of his family, just find it hard to believe he wouldn't come back to get them if he was still alive. Just wish there was some way to prove it one way or the other.

Very good point, I guess that's the hard point is there will never be closure until he's arrested or a body is found.

I checked on Vernon Ray Henry's case through NewsLibrary articles and found a mention back in 2007. The Coeur D'Alene FBI agent was quoted as saying that there was reason to suspect Vernon was back in North Idaho. I'm intrigued as to what made the FBI suspect that at the time.

While it should be obvious Henry is still at large as of this posting date (11/26/2017) because this is a high profile case, just wanted to reflect you can officially find Vernon Ray Henry's warrant listed on the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office website. www.kcsheriff.com/active-warrants.html

Found something interesting. It was a 2010 Wanted Poster by the US State Department with specific references to Belize in Central America. I know it's authentic because the URL is a gov (Government) domain address. photos.state.gov/libraries/belize/231771/PDFs/2010-Wanted-Posted-HENRY149kb.pdfAlso in reference to earlier comments, based on what Pakman said in regards one of his profiles, I no longer consider the possibility that relatives of Vernon may be hiding him to be that likely.

I’m wondering if this is a case where they can catch him using passport photo technology.
