MALE Race: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . WHITE Date of Birth: . . . . . . . . . . MAY 12, 1957 Place of Birth: . . . . . . . . . BROWN Skintone: . . . . . . . . . . . . . MEDIUM Who to call if you've seen him: US Marshals Service 1-877-WANTED-2Drug trafficker and prison escapee Mauricio Menendez is one of only three fugitives that were on the US Marshals 15 Most Wanted list, and were removed without ever being located. He was on amw.com so his thread gets put in the AMW Cold Case fugitives subforum, however I don't know if he was ever aired in the 90s. In 1989, the DEA arrested Menendez in a New York drug sting. He was accused of laundering millions for the Medellin and Cali drug cartels in Colombia. He also claimed to be a cousin of the infamous drug lord, Pablo Escobar. He was sent to a prison in Manhattan but quickly developed a plan to escape. Menendez and fellow inmate German Velez volunteered to spend their weekends by buffing the floors of the prison's hospital section. However, by using smuggled hacksaw blades, they spent several months cutting the security bars of a window facing a back alley. In the Spring of 1990, their escape plan was completed. On Apr 1, 1990, they had an older inmate fake a heart attack and during the chaos, they removed the security bars and climbed out of the window using an extension cord. They lowered themselves fifty feet to the alley and fled in a waiting car. Thoughts? German Velez was eventually arrested in Venezuela but Menendez was never located and was removed from the Marshals Most Wanted list in 2006. I have a few questions about this case because it's so old. First, could German Velez have been added to the Marshals Most Wanted List at the same as Menendez since we don't know exactly when he was captured. Second, if Menendez was really one of Pablo Escobar's cousins, then I feel this case would have gotten much more attention, so I doubt that claim. Finally, was he ever profiled on AMW? Since he was on the Marshals Most Wanted List it's certainly a possibility. Anyway, I feel Menendez fled back to the drug cartels in Colombia and is most likely still there, if he didn't die in the Colombian drug wars of the 1990s. web.archive.org/web/20070606123646/http://www.amw.com/fugitives/brief.cfm?id=26965www.justice.gov/marshals/investigations/most_wanted/menendez15.pdfAdmin Note: If you have any news-related updates on this case, please contact us here: amwfans.com/thread/1662/website-contact-form

You'd think he was aired on AMW since they usually profiled fugitives on both the USMS and FBI's top fugitives lists but there seems to be no proof. No clue as to why he was removed. Perhaps the Marshals determined he wasn't as big a threat anymore and there were fugitives with a higher priority they wanted to put on there.

I know both John Vu and Menendez were removed from the Marshals List in 2006 and was wondering if anyone could confirm that they were both removed at the same time? I think the most likely possibility as to why Menendez was removed was that the leads had dried up for several years. The Marshals then had to consider the possibility that he was either dead or wasn't going to be arrested in South America with help from a tipster. So yeah, I would agree that other more recent fugitive cases had a bigger priority.

Yes, Vu, Menendez and Hemp were all removed at the same time in 2006. The Marshals never gave an explanation for their removals.
Also I'm almost 100% sure Menendez was profiled on AMW in the 90s, because he was on AMW's trading cards.

Also I'm almost 100% sure Menendez was profiled on AMW in the 90s, because he was on AMW's trading cards. Which trading cards were these? I've seen the listing on the old site for the 2003 version and he's not on there, but I know AMW had another set made around 1992 so was he on there?

Okay, that's really weird, because I could have sworn he was on one of the cards in the 2003 pack. Maybe I'm misremembering things?

Okay, that's really weird, because I could have sworn he was on one of the cards in the 2003 pack. Maybe I'm misremembering things? I think we need a 2003 Playing Card Listing thread then. I'm sure some members who never saw the cards would be interested in it. I'll start researching to make the thread now.

It's driving me crazy, because he's not on the website, but I could have sworn I had him on a trading card. I could also be confusing him with Vincent Walters too Trading card thread is an excellent idea though!

While browsing ebay, I came across an old wanted poster of Mauricio Menendez. The poster mentions that he was born in the Colombian community of Pereira, Risaralda in the nation.

And also while browsing www.newspapers.com, I did see a TV Guide AMW episode entry (that I will eventually post in the 1991 episode guide) that possibly references Mauricio Menendez. It was for May 10 of that year and the articles pieced together mentioned it as "South American drug seller escapes Manhattan prison through an open window". We know that the prison Mauricio was in was in the NYC borough of Manhattan and that he escaped from an open window so this was probably him.

Found an article mainly about El Chapo that reads: "Colombian citizen Mauricio Menendez, 59, charged with cocaine and money laundering, fled in 1990 and remains on the Marshals Service most wanted list." So it seems it's not a matter of where Menendez is hiding but rather Colombia won't extradite him. Which would also explain his removal from the top 15 list. P.S. Based on that article, we can now say Menendez was still wanted at least as of January 25th, 2018. www.newindianexpress.com/world/2017/jan/25/united-states-judge-orders-el-chapo-to-appear-by-video-link-1563519.html

For what it's worth, the escape from federal institution charge is still active in PACER federal warrants search as of January 21st, 2022.
