It's pretty easy to tell how many FBI Top Tenners AMW has caught. After all, there's a list of all the fugitives on the FBI's website, and all one has to do is cross-reference the list with AMW's capture roster to see that there have been 21 fugitives caught between the two lists.
However, it's a different story with the U.S. Marshals' 15 Most Wanted.
Unlike the FBI, the Marshals don't have a list of every single fugitive that has been on the list. Heck, up until about 10 years ago the Marshals would simply delete the poster and remove all trace of the fugitive from their website. Now they have a "Captured fugitives" section, but even that's not 100% accurate (Robert Jackson is conspicuously absent).
So I've decided to do my very best to try and see how many of the U.S. Marshals' 15 Most Wanted AMW has helped capture over the years.
This is a bit tricky, since Google News' archive search is a pain in the rear to use (No joke; I used the exact same search terms and the exact same settings and got one result when I searched by relevance and no results when I searched by date). The newspaper search is a little bit better, but still annoying. And it's going to be really annoying to search each individuals' name one by one.
But we do have a few clues.
According to this article, AMW had caught five of the Top 15 by the time this article was published on June 12, 1989. However, this article also quotes an AMW source as saying the show had caught 48 fugitives, when we all know John List (who is mentioned as the show's latest capture) was Capture #50.
Here's a rough list of who I have as being on the U.S. Marshals' Top 15 and being a direct capture.
Capture #10 - Mark Goodman
Capture #22 - James Renton
Capture #35 - William Hewlett
Capture #36 - Rebecca Hewlett (this article claims she was on the list as well, and I could have sworn I read another article that said the same thing)
Capture #44 - Vernon Earle
Capture #123 - Robert Nauss
Capture #162 - Vincent Giattino
Capture #165 - Michael Lucas (http://articles.baltimoresun.com/1991-08-14/news/1991226214_1_lucas-fugitive-marshals)
Capture #215 - Timothy Anderson
Capture #704 – Reginald Boxley
Capture #758 – Eddie Mathis
During Eddie Mathis' capture report, John Walsh claims he was the 23rd fugitive taken off the list by AMW tips. Assuming this is true, and assuming everyone listed before Mathis is accurate, then there's 12 captured between 1988-2003 that are missing.
However, he didn't say this until AFTER Karl Muench's capture was briefly mentioned. So was John referring to Mathis or Muench? I assume he meant Mathis, but something else lends credence to the other possibility.
Capture #768 – Buddy Beavers
Capture #786 – Ronnie Drane
When AMW was upgraded in 2004, they claimed that 24 fugitives had been captured off the Most Wanted List. That means they forgot to count either Buddy Beavers or Ronnie Drane, right? Or, it could be my theory that John Walsh, for some reason, counted Muench as one of the 15 Most Wanted when, in fact, he wasn't. So if they retconned that, it would mean AMW had actually caught 22 off the Marshals' list, and that Beavers and Drane would have been 23 and 24, respectively.
Of course, there's also the possibility that I'm overthinking this and AMW just forgot to count someone. It's happened before.
Capture #804 – Timothy Berner
Capture #844 – Phillip Williams
Capture #846 – John Lockhart
Capture #870 – Jody Thompson
Capture #935 – LeaAnn Howard
Capture #936 – Byron Perkins
Capture #939 – Kenneth Freeman
Capture #1031 – David Green
Capture #1051 – Sarah Pender
Capture #1099 – Paul Merhige
Capture #1109 – Albert James Turner
Capture #1118 – Paul Clouston
Capture #1152 – Robert Jackson
Capture #1159 – Richard Heeringa
Obviously, there's many more fugitives than are listed here, but I think collectively, as a forum, we can find who is missing.
