So here's something bizarre I discovered while researching old AMW cases. Apparently, in December 2016, Jerry Wiggins, the man convicted of killing South Florida nanny Monica Valdizan, committed suicide while serving a life sentence in a Florida prison. He had just been let out of his cell when he jumped off a walkway, flipped in the air and landed on his head.
There's speculation that, shortly before his death, he had smoked a cigarette that had been laced with K2, a type of synthetic drug that can cause people to have violent side effects. This wouldn't be the first time someone "committed suicide" while high on that drug, and probably didn't even realize what they were doing.
The then-unsolved murder of Monica Valdizan was profiled three times on AMW in 2004; twice in February and once in April. This was one of the cases that John Walsh took personally, and asked Lance Heflin himself to air the case.
