Victor Talavera and his family believe they know who killed his son, 33-year-old Nick Carrillo, on the night of Feb. 3.
It was a man who grew up in the same north-side neighborhood as Carrillo, Talavera said. Now he's worried that man is trying to cross the U.S.-Mexico border to flee authorities.
Fort Worth police obtained an arrest warrant for Jesus Duran a day after Carrillo's slaying, said homicide Sgt. Joe Loughman.
Talavera, 61, and his wife are in the process of adopting two of Carrillo's three daughters in the aftermath of the shooting, which occurred at the house Carrillo shared with his girlfriend in the 4300 block of Martha Lane.
Those two daughters and six other children, two of whom were fathered by Duran, were in the home and witnessed the shooting, Talavera said.
Duran "was shooting in a room where his own kids were sitting," Talavera said. "All we want right now is for him to be caught, for justice to take place."
A disagreement over the children led to the shooting, Talavera said. Carrillo's girlfriend apparently had two children from a previous marriage to Duran, and Duran had come to visit them.
Around 10 p.m., Carrillo told Duran, 35, that it was late and he needed to leave.
"That's where it erupted," Talavera said. "Nick wanted to get the kids to bed."
Carrillo was pronounced dead at 10:24 p.m.., according to Tarrant County medical examiner's records. The official manner of death is listed as homicide, caused by gunshot wounds of the chest.
Duran was indicted last March on federal drug-trafficking charges, according to court documents. The documents also show that he had previously "showed up to his wife's residence at approximately 3:00 a.m." last July 4, "and threatened to kill himself."
Carrillo was sentenced to seven years in prison in 2002 for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
For Talavera and his wife, Esther, the days are now filled with tending to their granddaughters, ages 3 and 5, getting back in the swing of parenting and receiving help from professional counselors as the family adjusts to life without Carrillo.
"Our family needs to heal," Talavera said. "We've got to start the process of healing."

Thoughts? Earlier the day I posted the story of Jose Medel Martinez-Lopez, a very similar fugitive case and wanted to continue this theme because of how incredibly stupid I find both alleged murders.
Duran allegedly murdered a guy for wanting to put his kids to bed, and now is a fugitive and can't see them at all anymore anyway! I doubt he has any remorse for allegedly murdering Carrillo, but imo he must feel like an idiot now about his children. This is a completely senseless and tragic case and Duran needs to be caught.
Speaking of that, Duran was at least still at large as of March 21st, 2018 based on the Tarrant County weekly wanted listing from that date (every week they show a different set of fugitives wanted by the county, sometimes some of the fugitives are the same from other weeks, sometimes new faces). So since I've seen no articles proving otherwise, I'm going to assume based on that that Duran is unfortunately still at large as of this posting date (4/15/2018): access.tarrantcounty.com/content/dam/main/sheriff/MostWanted/MostWanted_032118.pdf
You can always call Crime Stoppers or Tarrant County to double check but please do call if you know Duran's whereabouts, as this is too tragic a case for him to not answer for what he allegedly did.
