Baton Rouge police have identified a man who they say pulled out a gun Saturday night and fired at two men on Cristy Drive, killing one and wounding the other.
Jaime Rivera, 26, 1283 Cristy Drive, is wanted on counts of second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon, Baton Rouge police spokesman Cpl. Don Coppola said late Sunday.
Police also released a photo Sunday morning of the man said to be the shooter.
Eduardo Olivas, 33, of Denham Springs, died from several gunshot wounds following an apparent argument with Rivera about 7:45 p.m. in the 1200 block of Cristy Drive, Coppola said.
A second victim, a 36-year-old man, also was struck by gunfire and was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Coppola said.
Relatives of Olivas who gathered on Cristy Drive late Saturday said he is from Mexico, has a wife and four children, and was visiting his sister in Baton Rouge and doing drywall work in the area. The other victim was a close friend of Olivas, they said.
The shooting was witnessed by Olivas’ sister, who said Olivas and his friend were hanging out in the driveway when a man in a green van who appeared to be intoxicated pulled up, got out and tried to pick a fight with Olivas’ friend.
Olivas asked the man, who was pacing back and forth, “Why don’t we talk about this?”
The man shot Olivas multiple times and then shot his friend in the stomach and fled.
Olivas’ nephew, Pedro Moreno, said they didn’t know the man who fired the shots but gathered from his comments that he lived at the residence at one time.
Moreno said his uncle was “a really friendly person who liked to work and spend time with his family.”

Thoughts? This is an extremely tragic case in that it seems based on the alleged account Rivera didn't really even know Olivas that well or at all, he was simply drunk and looking for a fight. It's one of the most unnecessary murders I've come across recently. I assume Rivera may have went back to Mexico by now since that's where him and his family is from, but I would be on alert for any workers doing drywall down for anyone living down south.
