URBANA — Authorities are looking for two more men who allegedly took part in the gang rape of a woman almost a year ago in Champaign.
Three men were arrested early Friday and appeared in Champaign County Circuit Court Monday; warrants were issued for the other two Monday afternoon.
Champaign police investigator Robb Morris said he's been working on the case since it happened Sept. 23, 2012. Only recently did DNA evidence come back from the state crime lab that meshed with statements he had from witnesses giving him probable cause to arrest three of the five men Friday and seek warrants for the other two.
Those three — brothers Alejandro Campos-Alvarez, 25, and Alfredo Campos-Alvarez, 23, both of Urbana; and Christian Jaimes-Rodriguez, 19, of Champaign, were arraigned Monday and remain in the county jail in lieu of $5 million bond.
Police are now looking for Adan Campos-Martinez, 34, and Pedro Valerio-Mendez, 22. The last known address for both was in the 1300 block of Queens Way, Champaign.
Campos-Martinez and Valerio-Mendez were also charged Monday with five counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault and one count of aggravated kidnapping in connection with the attack on an intoxicated University of Illinois student on Sept. 23, 2012.
Morris and Assistant State's Attorney Stephanie Weber said the attack on the woman, an international student who had been in the community only a few weeks, took place at the Queens Way address. But the incident began hours earlier when the woman became separated from friends at a Champaign bar.
"There are five Hispanic males that go to the Chester Street bar on Sept. 22. Early on the morning of the 23rd, one of them encounters a young lady on the dance floor. She was on the floor alone but came with a bunch of friends. She disappears. Her friends go looking for her and can't find her inside or outside," Morris said, adding they made a missing persons report about two hours later.
"In the interim, one of the five, Alfredo Campos-Alvarez, has walked her off the dance floor to a waiting vehicle where his brother (Alejandro Campos-Alvarez), uncle (Adan Campos-Martinez), and two friends are waiting," Morris said.
They then drove the intoxicated woman, now 24, to the Queens Way address.
"She has passed out on the way up there. She is disrobed," he said, adding that four of the men then took turns allegedly having sex with her. The fifth man was in the home while it was going on.
Morris said the woman awoke during the assault by the fourth man. She grabbed her dress, put it on, and told them that she wanted to go home. One gave her a phone to use but she couldn't remember the numbers of her friends and her own phone had been stolen earlier in the evening.
Morris said she talked the men into taking her back to the campus apartment of a friend. After they dropped her off, police were called and the woman was taken to an area hospital. Weber said she had multiple injuries. They estimated that she was assaulted for three to four hours.
Morris said one of his first breaks in the case came from the recovery of the woman's phone. That led him to other witnesses.
"We have statements from people who would be first-hand witnesses and we're confident we're in a good position," he said, as far as knowing what happened to the woman.
Morris and Weber said she did not sustain lasting physical injuries.
"She is very resilient," Morris said.
Weber said authorities learned last week that some of the men were planning to leave the area. Morris said four of the five are in the country illegally.
Fearful that they would flee, Weber said investigators stepped up their efforts to develop enough probable cause to arrest all five. The two who have not been arrested are believed to be in Mexico.
The Campos-Alvarez brothers were arrested in a car on Interstate 57 on the west side of Champaign Friday morning. Jaimes-Rodriguez was arrested a short time later at a home on Raintree in Champaign, Morris said.
Weber said even though only four of the men are believed to have raped the woman, she charged all five under the theory that because all were present, they were each accountable for the actions of the others.
Each of the six counts is a Class X felony carrying penalties upon conviction of six to 30 years in prison. If the state can prove that the crimes charged were separate acts, it's possible that the sentences on each count could run consecutively.
