Los Angeles police are hunting for a killer believed to be behind the deaths of a woman and a teenager from the same neighborhood who bodies were found dumped near two freeways less than a year apart.
LAPD officials on Tuesday offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the deaths of Michelle Lozano, 17, and Bree'Anna Guzman, 22.
Lozano's naked body was found in April 2011 wrapped in plastic and stuffed in a container along Interstate 5, LAPD Capt. William Hayes told reporters, according to the Los Angeles Times.
She was last seen near her high school, Lincoln High in the neighborhood of Lincoln Heights, at around 4 p.m. on April 24, the day before her body was found, Hayes said.
Guzman, a mother-of-two who also lived in Lincoln Heights, told her mother she was running out to get some cough drops on the night of Dec. 26, 2011, and never returned home.
Investigators found her body nearly a month later, on Jan. 26, dumped near an on-ramp to the 2 freeway, police said.
Initially, investigators suspected the two killings could be connected.
On Tuesday, Hayes announced forensic evidence showed they were likely committed by the same person.
But at this point, detectives were still in largely in the dark because they didn't have a description of the suspect or any information about a possible vehicle.
"My biggest concern is I have no eyewitnesses," Hayes said.
He declined to elaborate on what kind of evidence linked the two slayings.
The rewards, which totaled $100,000, were being offered by Los Angeles City Councilman Gil Cedillo, police said.
Cedillo urged anyone with any information to step forward.
Relatives from both families attended Tuesday's conference.
Darlene Guzman, Bree'Anna's mother, wore a shirt with a picture of her daughter on it, the Los Angeles Times reported.
"We don't have any answers," Guzman said.
On the night she disappeared, Bree'Anna said she wasn't feeling well and went out to Rite Aid to get some cough drops, Guzman recalled.
"Your daughter walks out and says, 'I'll be right back,' and doesn't," she said.
Thoughts? The different rewards are a little confusing, especially since the above article is from a year ago, but I do know on the FBI's website they are officially offering $25,000 for information. Obviously it seems Michelle and Bre'Anna's murders were committed by the same person, meaning, in my opinion, there is a possible serial killer in their neighborhood. I wouldn't be surprised if Michelle and Bre'Anna were not his first murders.
