David Martin Ruiz, wanted for a homicide in Plano, Texas, was a web-exclusive case on AMW's old website. (According to a 2009 article, it was supposed to air on tv, my short-term memory is terrible but if he was in fact aired on AMW please let me know). Below is the archive description of the case:
Strangers Become Fast Friends In Medical Lab
David Ruiz was in Plano, Texas on business, but it's not the kind of business you might expect.
Police in Texas say Ruiz travels the country, visiting medical research facilities which test unapproved prescription medication on volunteers, who are paid for their services.
Such human trials are an important step in the FDA approval process for new medicines.
While he was in the waiting room of one such facility in Plano, police say Ruiz began a conversation with a friendly stranger, Adrain Porier.
Ruiz mentioned that he was from out of town and without a place to stay.
Adrain was also from out of town, but was crashing at a friend's house; he didn't think bringing Ruiz along would be too much of an inconvenience.
Police: New Friends Bicker In Bar
After finishing up at the medical facility, Adrain's friend -- and host -- Phillip picked Ruiz and Adrain up from work. The three men went back to Phillip's apartment complex, parked his car, and walked to a nearby sports bar.
Shortly after arriving at the establishment, Ruiz and Adrain got into a heated argument, and were asked to leave.
On the walk home, the argument continued. By the time the three guys got back to Phillip's apartment, he had grown tired of the bickering.
Phillip let Ruiz and Adrain into the apartment and told them he was going to go next door to hang out with another buddy.
Cops: No Good Deed Goes Unpunished
According to police, the confrontation between Ruiz and Adrain not only continued after Phillip left, but must have escalated as well.
Andrew and Austin Hickens, two neighbors who shared a divided balcony with the apartment, could tell something was brewing next-door.
Concerned, one of the Hickens peeked through the vertical blinds that blocked the sliding door on the balcony. According to police, at least one of the cousins saw Adrain on the floor motionless.
Both Andrew and Austin rushed around to Phillip's door, but were unable to get in; something was blocking the door.
The cousins contacted Phillip and the three of them were able to muscle their way through the door. Ruiz had been holding it shut.
Once inside the apartment, the three friends saw Adrain on the ground and Ruiz with two duffel bags over his shoulders and a hand behind his back. Cops say he was wielding a knife, which they say he used to murder Adrain.
Without delay, Ruiz rushed out the front door past the cousins and Phillip. They gave chase, but Ruiz was eventually able to lose them after running through a vehicle repair shop.
Ruiz has since vanished, and police need your help locating him.
He has family ties to Arizona, but could be anywhere. Keep in mind that Ruiz frequents these medical research facilities as a source of income.
Thoughts? Collin County Warrants search confirms this is still an active case. I wish AMW gave this case a little more attention as I feel it is solvable. Ruiz could still be out frequenting medical research facilities, but considering the passage of time, it wouldn't surprise me if he either fled to Mexico or has laid low in Arizona all these years.
