Case Summary:
On July 1st, 2017, 22-year-old Devin Burney was fatally shot as he and his friends left the Noah Lounge on Broad Street in South Providence, Rhode Island. Burney was shot while he was shielding his girlfriend from the gunfire.
The police said at the time that Burney’s murder was part of a decades-old deadly feud among gangs. Burney, a former high school basketball star, had friends in street gangs associated with Clowntown and Lockwood that align with the gang from the Chad Brown housing projects, according to police.
26-year old John Minaya, also known as "G-Money", of Providence, admitted in February 2019 to discharging a firearm from a motor vehicle and conspiring with a man John Nunez to commit felony assault. In exchange for his plea, state prosecutors agreed to dismiss murder and multiple firearms charges.
Authorities initially believed Minaya to be the triggerman, but DNA evidence revealed it was in fact Nunez who committed the shooting, according to Minaya's lawyer.
In February of 2020, a judge sentenced Minaya to 15 years, with nine to serve and the remainder suspended with probation, plus a consecutive suspended 10-year sentence with probation. The judge emphasized that Minaya would be on probation through 2045, meaning that he could face 16 years behind bars if he fails to obey the law.
According to his U.S. Marshals wanted poster, a murder warrant for Nunez's arrest was issued in March 15th, 2018.
At least in February 2020, Nunez, who would now be 30 years old, remained at large.

Thoughts? It would seem Nunez is still at large as of this posting date (5/13/2020), Nunez is still listed as one of the U.S. Marshals Most Wanted fugitives out of the District of Rhode Island: www.usmarshals.gov/district/ri/fugitives/index.html
P.S. Nunez was said to be 30 in Feb. 2020 at least but his date of birth is not listed on his wanted poster.
It should be noted, in my opinion, that Devin Burney was mentioned in that article as being friends with gang members, but it doesn't even say he was actually in a gang. (When you grow up neighborhoods where gangs exist, the odds are against not winding up having at least one friend who is in and/or winds up joining a gang or knowing someone in a gang even if you have no interest in that lifestyle). So what makes this case even more tragic is Burney may have been killed for a feud he technically wasn't even a part of. He was shielding his girlfriend from gang feud gunfire and lost his life because of it. Partial justice has been served, but Devin Burney's family will not have full justice until Nunez is hopefully one day caught and convicted as well.
