YORK, Maine —
State police are turning to the public for assistance with a cold case murder investigation that started 12 years ago Tuesday.
On Sept. 13, 2004, the body of 40-year-old Wendy Morello was found in a trash can on Riverwood Drive in York.
She was last seen by family in her hometown of Worcester, Massachusetts, on Sept. 5 and was reported missing on the day her body was discovered.
Police have spent the past 12 years searching for clues about who killed Morello, but have not been able to track down a suspect.
Officials said in 2004 that they believed Morello was killed elsewhere before her body was moved to Riverwood Drive.
Police continue to investigate if Morello’s murder is connected to several others like it in Massachusetts around the same time period.
"When Ms. Morello's case came in, I believe Worcester was working on two homicides in their city that may have had similarities to this case,” Lt. Brian McDonough of the Maine State Police said. “We can't say for certain whether or not a serial killer was involved in this. It's something that we can't rule out."
