Authorities in Atlanta are trying to identify the man who killed 14-year old Nicole Smith in 1995. AMW aired the case twice in 2006. On Jun 7, 1995, 14-year old Nacole Smith was walking to her school when she realized that she had forgotten her book report. Leaving her friends, she took a shortcut to her home, when she was attacked by a black male who proceeded to viciously rape her and shoot her to death. Security guards found her body when they heard the gunshots at 9:20 AM. Her killer then disappeared. Several years later, on Jun 20, 2004, a 13-year old girl was preparing to celebrate Father's Day in East Point, Georgia. The girl was lured by a man and was raped at knifepoint. Her attacker fled and her family didn't celebrate Father's Day. DNA evidence linked the same man to the 1995 murder of Nacole Smith and the 2004 rape. At the time of the 2004 rape, the perpetrator was believed to be in his late-20s. Thoughts? I'm quite disappointed that AMW only aired this case twice in 2006 and forgot about it, when I feel this case is completely solvable. As Scumhunter mentioned in the Alexis Flores thread, I have to wonder had Nacole Smith been white if this case would get alot more attention. I feel her killer probably still lives in the Atlanta area and probably committed both known offenses in June for whatever reason. Admin Note: Based on crime location, our advice for anyone with information on this case would be to contact the East Point Police Department (Georgia) at 404-559-6226Admin Note #2: If you have any news-related updates on this case, please contact us here: amwfans.com/thread/1662/website-contact-formwww.eastpointpolice.org/Meda%20Releases%2018.htmwww.accessnorthga.com/detail.php?n=158983&c=2

Somewhat off-topic, but I think a socioeconomic factor may also be involved in missing and murdered children cases as well. For example, even though April Tinsley's white, and I've never been to Fort Wayne to know for sure it seems mainly a working-class area that isn't exactly Bel-Air Calfornia and I'm pretty sure her parents were not affluent millionaires like Jon Benet Ramseys', since if they were we would have known about it. These are part of the reasons I blame for her case remaining unsolved over 25 years. Granted, JonBenet's hasn't been solved either, but she's had far more publicity and help. Unfortunately, many missing children cases involving minorities also happen in minority neighborhoods with poverty in them.
Anyway, I get a feeling this guy might not necessarily live in the Atlanta area since if he were he would have been caught. So many times sketches are awful, and I must say this is a pretty good one. If they haven't already, if I were authorities I would look into states that border or are near Georgia such as Florida, Alabama, South Carolina etc. and see if there are any cases that are similar in nature. Perhaps this man has family or a job in Georgia.
Also, AMW drives me crazy with unknown cases sometimes (on the old forum I stated AMW should adhere to an only one unknown case per episode rule since they're so hard to solve) but this is one I have no problem with them airing again as I feel it can be solved.

I can't entirely blame them. There are a ton of cold cases that are languishing for 40 or 50 years now.

Along with Zodiac, JonBenet Ramsey, Asha Degree and the beheaded St Louis Jane Doe, I would like to see Nacole Smith's case solved in my lifetime! I've followed since its first airing. I think the previous mentioned latter case and this one can very well be solved via familial DNA, rather genealogy site hit or contingent upon collection of DNA sample from an arrested relative in states that require.

I agree: it sounds like the killer is deceased. I think there would have been an announcement of an arrest at this point. When they say they "now know who killed her", that almost seems to indicate that the suspect is dead.

I'm thrilled it looks like they've closed the case! I'm just waiting until the official announcement to annotate the thread with all the resolved exclamation points lol.

If he is deceased, I hope Nacole’s mother has some peace in knowing that her daughter’s killer will never harm another innocent person again.

I remember the same thing happened with Erica Smith's killer when it was finally determined who it was. Still, I'm so happy this case was finally resolved! I remember when AMW aired this case, I always thought it was one of the most solvable unidentified suspect cases the show ever profiled, and I was confident that it would be solved. It took a little longer than I expected it to, but I'm glad it finally happened.

There is never closure in a case like this and I think it’s disrespectful to a victim’s family to say there is closure. I do hope, as I have said, though, that Nacole’s mother can take some comfort in knowing that her child’s killer will never be able to harm another innocent child ever again.
If he died of liver and kidney failure, he likely had a painful death, which was richly deserved considering what he did.
