In 1981, career criminal William Wallace Stabler Jr. shot at two police officers in Corte Madera, Calif., who were investigating a domestic violence call. To make his escape, Stabler forced a man at gunpoint to drive out of San Francisco, then stole the man's car to make the rest of his getaway. In the 70s, Stabler committed several robberies as the "Halloween Mask Bandit," and was captured after leading police on a high-speed chase and shooting at them with a rifle through the back window. For years after the chase, Stabler kept up a "pen pal" relationship with one of the police officers who was shot during the chase. The relationship lasted until Stabler was paroled. The last photo taken of Stabler (not the one pictured) is from 1988 when he was arrested in New York under the alias "William Hudson." Stabler was last seen in 1991/1992 in New York, where he was shopping at a Banana Republic and had a Doberman named Daisy. No solid leads on Stabler have been reported in 21 years. AMW first profiled Stabler in 1990, and was last profiled in April 2003. If he's still alive, he's 80 years old now. Stabler apparently was a heroin and meth addict, and was reportedly ill around the time of his last profile (if his amw.com archived page is to be believed). Thoughts? I know we talk very often about how old-time fugitives are likely dead, but in this case it's very likely Stabler is no longer living. He apparently was still alive in the early 90s (he would have been 59 years old at the time of his last sighting) but as the years have gone by it's doubtful that he's still living. On the other hand, if he is still alive, it sounds like he retired from the criminal life. His AMW profile said he no longer dressed like a cowboy and looked more "collegiate," so it sounds like he was trying to do a better job of blending in and not attracting attention to himself. And for the record, yes, Czar's avatar did partially inspire me to post this Admin Note #1: Based on wanted location, our advice for anyone with information on this case would be to call Bay Area Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or submit a web tip to them by clicking on the following link: www.tipsubmit.com/webtips.aspx?AgencyID=584&DSID=584 Admin Note #2: If you have any news-related updates on this case, please contact us here: amwfans.com/thread/1662/website-contact-form

When discussing cold case fugitives, it seems the two most popular theories are A) dead and B) Overseas, and espeically if a Hispanic fugitive, Mexico or another country in Latin America. But this really is one case where it is more likely than not the fugitive is deceased considering his past history of drug abuse.
And yes, while not condoning his crimes, it does seem he was attempting to live a "straight" life as a fugitive.

Something that interests me about this case is how Stabler was what you call a dying type of criminal (considering how old he was and that he wen't on the run in 1981). He reminds me more of a depression-era gangster than a typical AMW fugitive in that he mainly committed armed robberies and gun crimes against law enforcement. He even gave the motorist he carjacked 20 dollars so he could call a cab. For anyone who's seen his airing, they brought up letters he wrote while in prison; one of them mentions he said that the old-time professional thieves are just about worn out and the thrill seeking adventurous punks are on the prowl. Another mentioned to the officer he shot It was nothing personal, it was all cops and robbers as far as I was concerned.
Another mentioned that he wanted to find some happiness near the end of his life. I'm going to agree with both of you that he probably managed to pull that off. I feel for reasons that have been brought up that he's dead by now, probably from the after-effects of his narcotics addictions. His old AMW.com profile page mentions he had ties to the Mexican Mafia prison gang. Something tells that when after he died, he already asked the prison gang to do him a final favour and conceal or destroy his remains so that Law Enforcement would never manage to locate him.

I found Stabler still has a warrant in Marin County's online warrants search as of this update (7/26/2018), although oddly they put it as issued in 2013. So I guess an old one expired and they reissued or something. apps.marincounty.org/WarrantSearch/Warrant/Details/CO046892A?lastName=StablerAlso they list some profile statistics we can now odd. Stabler would be 82 years old today if still alive. Name: STABLER,WILLIAM WALLACE Date of Birth: 1/23/1933 Height: 6' 02" Weight: 230 lbs. Gender: Male Race: White Eye Color: Blue Hair Color: Brown
