During his shift on an outside work crew, Inmate Johnson requested to return early due to an illness and was given permission, but was never seen again. Not a ton of info here, but we do know Johnson was charged with sodomy, and is considered someone who should no be around children (obviously), so that is scary since he's still at large after two decades. I am trying to figure out how he escaped, we know that Steven was working on an outside work crew. Did he simply just walk away from the work crew unsupervised when he was supposedly going to return to the prison he was housed in, that sounds like what happened.
A bit surprised he was never on AMW, especially since it's not believed that Steven fled the US.

What confuses me about this incident is WHY did the prison staff approve this guy for an outside work crew? In Calif. where
I worked violent offenders, gang members, prior escapees, AND child molesters were ineligible for outside work crews by dept. classification policy. They were deemed a threat to the community, so why was this clown permitted to go past the gate? I'm
hoping Oregon has reviewed their work crew policy, and changed it's criteria. Sadly, this guy has victimized who knows how many
children since his "escape!"

Hi babyboomer,
Thank you for joining the forum and thank you for keeping the public safe from these guys! What also confuses me is aren't child molesters often kept away from general pop. as much as possible for their own protection as well because of how disliked they are by even other inmates? Here he is in outside work detail.
And yeah, I really hope this made Oregon change their procedures as well. This was 23 years ago, which of course is no excuse but does give some hope that enough time has lapsed that they learned some lessons.

Yes. These guy's are always segregated. Other inmates will kill them if they get access to them. I've seen it happen. When
these pukes go to court they're other offenders in the courtroom with them during arraignment. They remember them, and when they
unload the bus from county jail at the prison they assault them. It's the price they pay for their disgusting crimes. We tried to
prevent that, but we don't know their arrest record until they get processed inside. You'd be surprised who these guys are: Cops,
clergy, teachers, grand parents, on & on. Family members and school teachers are HIGH on the list of offenders.

Very good investigative work by all agencies involved. The article that was posted above mentioned that Johnson assumed the identity of a deceased child. We have seen other cold case fugitives do this.
