In 2016, Mejia was arrested for felony driving under the influence of liquor, after he struck a vehicle that allegedly caused the death of a young woman. Thoughts? The reason I'm adding Mejia is a breaking news case is A) Because he is the newest addition to the ICE Most Wanted list and B) because it has been attracting national attention as congressional representatives from Nebraska and Iowa demand answers about how this case was handled.
Apparently Mejia was arrested on January 31st. He is from Honduras and was an illegal immigrant. Federal authorities had requested ICE put him on detainer (An immigration detainer is a tool used by ICE and other Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials to identify potentially deportable individuals who are housed in jails or prisons nationwide.) However, Mejia was not considered a priority at the time. A Judge set a low bond of $50,000 which Mejia only had to pay 10 percent of. He was released on February 5th, never heard from since.
Senator Ben Sasse of Nebraska is outraged and feels Mejia should have never been on the list in the first place had the detainer been put in place. The Root family has started an effort to circulate a petition to try and get leaders to hold Judge Jeffrey Marcuzzo responsible for the low bond on Mejia.
As far as my thoughts, I think regardless of what did or didn't go wrong with ICE, Senator Sasse has every right to be upset that Mejia is currently free, and so does the Root family and I hope they're successful with their petitions on that Judge for such a ridiculous bond. (All the controversy seems to be about ICE, but it should be reflected that if it wasn't for Judge Marcuzzo's ridiculous bond, we might not even be talking about ICE in the first place). At the same time, I hope ICE is successful and captures Mejia and makes this situation a *somewhat* moot point. Normally Honduras doesn't extradite fugitives to the United States but articles say the U.S. and ICE are talking to Honduran officials so hopefully there's an exception made here. It's a complicated mess at the moment, but I'll just cross my fingers that ICE is able to capture Mejia and the Root family can see justice. So please call ICE if you have any information that you may feel helpful towards Mejia's capture.
