LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A teenager standing at a bus stop became Louisville's latest murder victim Monday night.
Police say he was shot in the chest and left for dead -- and as the Louisville community learns more about the victim, police are speaking out about why they're having trouble finding the person who pulled the trigger.
Cortez Randolph had just celebrated his 17th birthday on Dec. 12, and less than a week later, he was running for his life.
"[The] suspect approached the bus stop location, and that's where the first shot was fired," explained Lt. Todd Kessinger. "At that time, the victim attempted to flee the bus stop on foot."
The shooting happened Monday night at a TARC stop near the corner of Dixie Hwy. and Broadway. Crime tape stretched for several blocks, outlining where Randolph tried to get away. But he did not get far.
The teen's body was discovered across the street in Esquire Alley, behind a convenience store just after 11 p.m. The coroner says he had multiple gunshot wounds to the chest.
"I can say with reasonable certainty that he was targeted," Kessinger said. "It was not a random act. I can't get into the details about what would make us think that."
Randolph's family members declined to comment on camera, but confirm he has had some recent trouble with the law. Instead, they provided pictures showing the teen in his better days.
Randolph attended Moore High School, but had just transferred from Breckinridge Metro High School. That's where students go to transition after being held in juvenile detention.
His grandmother says, despite his problems, Randolph was an 'A' and 'B' student.
"There was another witness present at the bus stop," Kessinger said. "She was able to flee on foot and did not get harmed. She was able to give limited information due to the fact that once the shooting started, she ran to not get injured."
Police say they have no description of a suspect, and there have been no arrests at this time. It means that the community has no answers on why Louisville's latest murder victim is just 17 years old.

Thoughts? It seems like Cortez may have fell in with the wrong crowd and become a target, but there's still no excuse for his murder and the killer still needs to be found.
