(Above photo credit: West Virginia State Police Website) "The West Virginia State Police Cold Case Investigations Unit and the Ohio County Sheriff's Department are requesting your help to heat up a cold case. On June 13, 1977 Roberta Elam, a Postulant Nun, was raped and murdered on the grounds of Mount Saint Joseph's Convent, near Wheeling, West Virginia. Numerous hours were put into this investigation to no avail. Recently, the investigation was heated up and new forensic evidence have been identified through DNA analysis. We are trying to locate anyone who may have information concerning this investigation. If you have information you are asked to contact your local State Police Detachment. The tip you give may help solve this horrible crime." www.wvsp.gov/Pages/ColdCaseFiles.aspxMore information available at following links: robertaelam.blogspot.com/www.crimezzz.net/serialkillers/P/PENNSYLVANIA_strangler.phpThoughts? The more info links go into more detail on this case, and apparently it's believed Sister Roberta was a likely victim of the Pennsylvania Strangler- a man who raped and murdered women mainly in Washington County, Pennsylvania between November 1976 and June 1977. It's such a tragic case. It was apparently Sister Roberta's first time at the covenant and she was said to be attacked while praying. It takes an incredibly sick and an incredibly callous man to a commit a murder like that. It's going to be hard to solve this case nearly 40 years later, but we can hope. Finally saw the episode which amazingly ended with Paul Holes believing he has found Sister Robin's likely killer- a man named John Shaplak. He had previously been eliminated as a suspect due to his blood type not matching his military records, but.Holes stated there was a high likelihood of error due to outdated medical technology. According to the show, Shoplak has previously been accused of raping two girls and was convicted of robbing his own grandmother. According to Holes, Shoplak is believed to have allegedly bragged to a friend about raping a nun in 1977, and described it in a way only the killer would know. (I won't get too graphic but Shoplak was able to tell she was a virgin or- in his alleged words- "on the rag"). Shoplak died in August 2019, but because he was hospitalized prior to his passing, some of his tissue samples may still be within the hospital. The Ohio County Sheriff’s Office is currently pursuing Shoplak’s tissue samples to compare to the offender’s DNA profile. www.oxygen.com/the-dna-of-murder-with-paul-holes/crime-news/paul-holes-roberta-elam-nun-murderThis is pretty incredible, as I went into the episode thinking this would be Paul Holes' hardest case to solve from Season 1 of hos show, and instead it may turn out to be the easiest and/or first case he officially solved. Continue to be amazed by how good Paul Holes is at his job in general.
