(UPDATE: Bac Duong captured, Nayeri and Tieu still at large)A search continued Saturday for three men who escaped from the Orange County Central Men's Jail by apparently cutting through steel bars and rappelling down the side of the multistory facility, authorities said. Hossein Nayeri, 37, Jonathan Tieu, 20, and Bac Duong, 43, were all discovered unaccounted for about 9 p.m. Friday, Lt. Jeff Hallock of the Orange County Sheriff's Department said at a Saturday morning news conference. A search was immediately conducted at the Central Jail complex, located at 550 N. Flower St. in Santa Ana, and the adjacent Civic Center, but the inmates were not located, sheriff's officials said in a special bulletin. Information gathered by investigators revealed that the inmates were last seen about 5 a.m. Friday. The disappearance was confirmed about midnight, according to Hallock. "This was clearly a well thought out and planned escape" that may have been in the works for weeks or months, the lieutenant told reporters Saturday afternoon. Evidence indicated that the escapees had cut through 1/2-inch steel bars and made their way through plumbing tunnels before gaining access to an unsecured area of the jail's roof, he said. Once there, they seemed to have pushed aside barbed wire, used a "makeshift rope" -- possibly fashioned from sheets or clothing -- to rappel to the ground, then fled the area on foot, Hallock said. It was unclear if they received any assistance from anyone outside the complex, he added. The episode marked the third escape in the history of the maximum-security facility, which was built in the 1960s, according to the Sheriff's Department. The inmates had faced various charges: Tieu was held on suspicion of murder, Duong on an attempted murder charge, and Nayeri on charges of kidnapping and torture, the bulletin stated. Nayeri and Duong were ineligible for bail, while Tieu's had been set at $1 million, Hallock said. The FBI has announced a reward of up to $20,000 for information leading to the prisoners' capture. Anyone with information about the case was urged to call the Sheriff’s Department at 714-647-7000.

Wow CNN is talking about this and I'm shocked it's another Richard Matt and David Sweat type situation this time it's 3 escapees. I'm curious how much longer this will last, also curious if the FBI and the Marshals will add the, to their most wanted lists, but I'm hoping they are caught soon and it all plays out safely

The Marshals actually have room on the list to add all three- I take it they'd rather not have to- two is one thing- but three open slots is a lot. I wouldn't be surprised if the Marshals go ahead and add them anyway though considering they added Matt and Sweat though. (There's also a few other high-profile breaking news cases the Marshals are handling right now though- they referred to the Dana Lee William case (who killed a woman's husband in a home invasion and then abducted her) as their #1 priority at the moment.
What's also unique about this case is Tieu and Duong have the worst charges on paper- murder and attempted murder, yet Nayeri, the guy "only" wanted for kidnapping is arguably the scariest one of the three. The Prosecutor in his case compared him to Hannibal Lecter. It's very rare to have multiple jail escapees and the guy who didn't allegedly kill someone is actually scarier than the guy who allegedly did.

New article that goes into even more detail on Nayeri. He was a U.S. Marine with special operations training and a history of mental illness. His life is said to have fallen apart after he drove drunk and crashed his car, killing his friend. www.ocregister.com/articles/nayeri-701557-martinez-told.html

That makes everything even scarier, he has special forces training from the military, Maybe Guerrilla warfare and it could help him survive in remote areas I hope this doesn't become a Rambo type situation. Also I feel comfortable with the marshals adding all 3 to their most wanted list, the situation is as scary as it gets especially like I said with 3 individuals this time and the non murderer like you said Scumhunter is the scariest one of them all.

In the interest of fairness, it should be noted the Deputy District Attorney scolded the Prosecutor who compared Nayeri to Hannibal Lecter. (Whether the description is accurate or not, I can understand that can be viewed as a generalization as opposed to fact. (not to mention a statement like that will likely freak out the public more than they already are that the three escapees are on the loose). I remember there was controversy when the Prosecutor in Sarah Pender's case compared her to Charles Manson, albeit he was a real life killer.) I think the Prosecutor was just trying to stress how dangerous he is, but I understand the lead DA's position as well. www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/inmate-likened-to-hannibal-lecter_us_56a8d858e4b0f6b7d544578d

Crime Watch Daily did an interview with Tieu's sister and mother. At the time, they were afraid Tieu would be killed by his fellow escapees and say that he was once a straight A honor student before his legal troubles. I still feel like you make your bed you sleep in it- there's plenty of people who struggled in school or had a rough life that DIDN'T wind up in a life of crime afterwards. (Not to mention, I learned it was murder and not just attempted murder he was wanted for (I misread the charges initially) plus he allegedly carjacked a cab driver and discussed with the other two inmates about whether or not to kill him- so it's hard to have sympathy). However, I can understand he's still their family member, even if he was a mass murderer, he's still family.. crimewatchdaily.com/2016/02/03/exclusive-escaped-orange-county-inmates-family-speaks-out/
