LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The family of an 18-month-old murder victim is appealing to the public for help one year after the child's death. Police ruled the death of Antione Dixon, Junior a homicide after he was found unresponsive at his daycare with multiple injuries.
Many of his family members tells us they don't understand why no arrests have come, especially considering the suffering the little boy must have gone through just before his death. Now, they are making a plea and hope anyone who knows anything will come forward.
"You would give him something to eat and he would dance, he would do this little dance," said Rona Dixon, Antione's great aunt, about how she remembered him.
Antione Dixon, Rona's nephew and the boy's father, said his son was "loveable and he was laid back."
They are the memories of a sweet little boy the father, aunts, grandmothers and grandfathers of Antione Dixon Junior are trying to keep close to them one year after his death. That's because investigators say the injuries the 18-month-old suffered last November were brutal.
"Everything on the inside was severely damaged," Rona Dixon said.
"He looked like he been in a real bad car accident," said Timothy Shacklett, Antione Junior's grandfather. "That's how bad the injuries were."
"We was crying [at the hospital] because we didn't know where or how he got these scars," said Mary Fawbush, his great-grandmother.
The boy was taken to Kosair Children's Hospital after workers at the Little People Daycare found him hurt shortly after he was dropped off.
"He laid there in a coma," said Rona Dixon.
The coroner says Antione died of multiple blunt force injuries to multiple regions of his body.
"I can't imagine someone being beaten that way," Rona said. "I couldn't imagine it because you wouldn't do a dog that way."
Antione's father and aunts say they hadn't seen the baby that day.
"The mother and her boyfriend was left with the baby within the 24 hours," said Rona.
No one has been named as a suspect. The father's family believes it's a difficult case and that police are doing what they can.
"We don't want to lose this case," said Rona. "We don't want it to set on the back burner either."
They are hoping someone will bring police the break they need in the case.
"I know someone heard his cry," Rona said.
Although there have been no arrests, LMPD Homicide detectives say the case is still an active and open investigation. While they won't make any further comment, police ask anyone with information to call the LMPD Crime Tip Line at (502) 574-LMPD (5673).
Thoughts? The above article was from 2010, and Antione's tragic death happened in 2009. It's really confusing to me. Supposedly the day care owner claims his agency was cleared of wrong doing (although even the police say that's not entirely true and they're still investigating all leads), yet he's somehow found severely hurt right after he was dropped off. It's a case you'd think wouldn't have taken this long to solve, as there was obviously a lot of persons of interest to talk to, and yet, it's still listed as an open investigation on Louisville Police's website six years later.
