There was a 20/20 special on JonBenet's murder that I watched last night and it actually gave me more hope than I previously had.
There is a legendary detective named Lou Smit, who passed away in 2010, who has solved 90 percent of his cases. He was the guy Boulder DA Alex Hunter hired to investigate, but Smit quit because he felt they were zeroing in on John and Patsy Ramsey when he thought it wasn't either one of them (DNA-wise, he turned out to be right). He apparently gave his daughter a list of 20 names and said "nineteen of them are innocent, but one isn't". They've been able to rule out eight of those 20 names so far, so there's still twelve left from his list. Smit's granddaughters now do a podcast on JonBenet's case.
Additionally, I was under the possibly misguided assumption that any DNA evidence was too tainted to be used as evidence, but they do have foreign DNA from underneath JonBenet's fingernails, her underwear (unfortunately) and leggings. I always felt that although juries usually eat-up DNA evidence, the defense could have a good argument that the crime scene was contaminated even if there was DNA evidence prsented at trial. But the DNA advancements in cold cases we've seen lately tells me that it would have to be pretty significant to ignore if there was ever some sort of match. I also think a lot will depend on who they arrest if they ever make any arrests. Fair or not, a convicted sex offender you're going to immediately overrule any DNA inconsistencies if they say there's a match as opposed to someone with no prior arrests.
One thing- I know this may or not be of importance- but apparently the grand jury in the 90's didn't buy the intruder theory because the basement window broken into had cobwebs before the crime scene that were left untouched. My feeling based on this is JonBenet's killer may either be skinny in nature and/or short or both. (Ironically John Mark Karr was the perfect person physically to have slipped in through the window without disturbing the cobwebs- I mean he turned out to be a nutjob who falsely confessed- but physically-speaking). It is possible perhaps the killer broke in some other way and we're too obsessed with that window theory.
The biggest thing of all to me of is that 118,000 amount and who could have known about it, as HeadMarshal pointed out in 2015.
