Werner Gomez was aired on the September 27th, 2003 episode of America's Most Wanted as a commercial break fugitive. Below is the archived description of the case:
Cops say that on December 24, 2000, Werner Gomez was returning to a relative's residence to pick up his sleeping seven-year-old daughter after work. He entered, as he normally would, and proceeded to the bedroom where his daughter and a twelve-year-old female child was asleep. While in the bedroom, cops say he sexually assaulted the twelve-year-old while she was sleeping. Afterwards, Gomez left the room and residence with his daughter. As he was leaving, the victim ran into her sister's room and informed her of the sexual assault. At the same time, the victim's parents were arriving home from a social event and passed Gomez carrying his daughter out. As the parents entered the home, they were advised of the sexual assault. Police were notified and Gomez was taken into custody later that day.
On April 25, 2001, Gomez was indicted on four counts of sexual assault. Almost a year later, in April of 2002, the trial began. The defendant, Gomez, appeared for a few days, then vanished. The trial did continue and Gomez was found guilty. He has not been seen since his disappearance.
Thoughts? Why Gomez was free while on trial for sexually assaulting a 12-year old girl in the first place is beyond me. According to an old article, he faced 35 years in prison. Kind of a long potential term to be free....
