The three most popular DNA sites all denied being reached out to by L.E. Perhaps this is true as you are alerted to potential matches and perhaps law enforcement simply set up a nameless person/alias and sent DNA that way but I don't see why they would admit they were reached out to if it was true either.
If I was a Detective or any other type of law enforcement official, I would have ABSOLUTELY done the same thing to GSK case so this is not to criticize. These were unique circumstances.
Its just privacy concerns which is why I personally wouldn't use their services (although somewhat moot point since my parents did anyway).
It does seem, as even hinted at in the last episode of "Unmasking A Killer" on HLN, that a familial DNA match is what solves the case. This is not to discredit the documentary, but right now it seems coincidental that a match came after the final episode.

I would hope law enforcement are routinely running DNA samples through ancestry websites to be honest. Seems an easy way to quickly narrow down suspects.

Paul Holes, the recently retired DA for Contra Costa County (and who was very prominently featured in all documentaries on the GSK case), says investigators used GEDMatch, which is an open source DNA site- people enter their own DNA profiles or genealogical data- such as those you can get from ancestry.com, to try to find familial matches. This probably gives some relief to those who are outspoken on privacy concerns since it seems like basically a free voluntary DNA site (as opposed to people paying a service they thought was somewhat of a private entity to analyze their DNA only to have it used by law enforcement as well), although I agree that in cases such as GSK, public safety exceptions should be made. www.cnn.com/2018/04/26/us/golden-state-killer-dna-report/index.htmlwww.cnn.com/2018/04/27/us/golden-state-killer-arraignment/index.html

Deangelo appeared in court today- looking frail and cuffed to a wheelchair- only barely audibly saying "yes" when the Judge asked if he had a lawyer. (Deangelo has a court-appointed attorney). (Avove photo credit: BBC via Reuters) It's hard to imagine someone who looks like a feeble old-man being a serial killer, but one thing I've learned is despite the stereotypes killers don't have a "look." Most look like ordinary human beings like me and you. If he was caught when he was younger perhaps it would be a little different, but I think DeAngelo as an old man is what makes the juxtaposition probably hard for some. His defense attorney is complaining he's already being tried in the press. It's a fair thing to say as someone whose job it is to represent him and it is true that Deangelo is innocent until proven guilty. However, DNA, although not unsusceptible to flaws/rare errors, very rarely lies, and his defense will have their work cut out for them. losangeles.cbslocal.com/2018/04/27/golden-state-killer-suspect-joseph-james-deangelo-appears-in-court/www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-43928324www-m.cnn.com/2018/04/27/us/golden-state-killer-arraignment/index.html

All that anger and stress being taken out on his alleged victims then...DeAngelo paid a price of sorts from that in his current physical state.
Justice works in various ways...now on to the legal justice process.

There's some who speculate now that Deangelo isn't as sickly an old man as he appeared in court and that he reportedly was seen riding a motorcycle before his arrest. In other words, he's pretending and/or exaggerating. Granted its' Inside Edition saying this, but I could somewhat buy that theory. The fact of the matter is he's still a senior citizen and not the same person as his younger years (in terms of physical appearance strength etc... personality-wise obviously he's still an alleged serial killer). www.insideedition.com/golden-state-killer-case-suspect-joseph-james-deangelo-pretending-be-sickly-old-man-42905

Media reports are stating Deangelo is going to take a plea deal and admit to the murders in exchange for execution being taken off the table. IMO,this is a good thing. It saves the families from having to go through the horrors of a trial and given the fact California's DP is in name only,LWOP is the sentence he would have been serving anyway.

Yeah I wasn't sure at first but I now 100 percent believe that whole feeble old man who could barely speak in court was an act, Paul Holes confirmed it in interviews, but Deangelo at his age he'll be spending LWOP anyway.

Before he was arrested,Deangelo's neighbor said he was active yet in the course of 48 hours,he goes from healthy senior to feeble old man? It was an act and one I'm glad to see being put to rest.

DeAngelo has officially pleaded guilty. Also I get it, if anyone deserves the penalty it's him, but people don't seem to get DeAngelo was going to die in prison before he ever got the needle anyway. He's in his 70's and there were convicts sitting on death row for literally decades when they put a moratorium on the penalty. It is good now that DeAngelo's victims will now get a chance to confront him in court. People who are upset at DeAngelo not getting the death penalty aren't getting he would die in jail anyway. Instead, he can rot and think about what a piece of sh** he is for the rest of his life. lawandcrime.com/live-trials/live-trials-current/golden-state-killer/joseph-james-deangelo-pleads-guilty-in-golden-state-killer-murders/

My main reason for being generally against the death penalty is the potential for executing someone actually innocent, but I agree sometimes it's nice to just see these a-holes rot instead.
