Although I should mention that there is a frustrating lack of details as to how investigators came across Deangelo, one huge update is the Orange County DA confirmed that Deangelo is believed to also be the Visalia Ransacker.

More then ecstatic to finally hear of this apprehension! It seems like as long as the suspect still resides somewhere in the US and is still alive, then enough perseverance can solve what seems to be even the toughest cases. I know Law Enforcement does not have the capacity to do as much investigative work as was done in this serial killing case, but if more efforts were spent on solving these types of cases, and less priority was given to the ongoing war on drugs, I truly think we would see more of these needed arrests.

I'm going to lobby proboards to add a Love reaction button for this comment.

Sacramento DA ended by now saying more info will come out later, including exact type of technology that helped identify Deangelo. Don't want to reveal too many details in order to properly carry through with the case it seems.
This is understandable, and hopefully little by little more details will be revealed. (I still would have liked a few more non-DNA details such as did a public tip say to look at DeAngelo etc...)
Looking forward to hearing more though.

A great day. It will be interesting to follow the case as more details come out. We can now establish if he was in that photo of a community meeting. As far as I know DeAngelo was on no one's radar which does show the limitations of devoted web sleuths. There were thousands of people spending serious time on this case and none of them got close to suspecting this guy.

The thing is yes, web sleuths aren't actual detectives, and some will arrogantly think they're smarter than actual law enforcement, however, there is never anything wrong with the public helping out and developing theories and some cases have been solved in part because of internet sleuthers. The fact of the matter is Michelle McNamara was an ordinary citizen that helped generate publicity and the cult-like following of the case on the internet also helped to keep the case in the public and put the pressure on to finally solve the case. It might have been great detective work/DNA breakthroughs, but I feel the publicity thanks in large part to ordinary citizens/internet posters helped as well.
I do agree they are limited as far as investigative tools that detectives have and they don't, but I also feel the publicity sleuthing message boards, Reddit groups etc.. generate is invaluable.
One thing I like about our site is I feel I and most of us don't pretend to be experts and just like to discuss the case/give our theories (NOT accusing the other sites of pretending, and I've mentioned before I'm a big fan of the proboards site on just this one case- a lurker, but still a big fan). As a matter of fact, I started this site as just a fan site to discuss AMW when the official Fox boards went down and the sleuthing aspect sort of happened by accident.
However, I do agree, we may soon find out if Deangelo was at the meeting. He doesn't look like the one guy up front some suspected. But since he was still an officer at the time, I'm assuming there were officers at the meeting as well, so could he have been one of the men in uniform guarding the venue?

I agree with what you’ve said Scumhunter, at the end of the day we are a priceless force of sleuths, regardless of which site your a member of, we do add theories to the speculation of what may have happened to the perpetrator we’re discussing. I am someone with a lot of theories, opinions & questions, and sleuth sites are amazing because you learn something from someone else, and hear a different opinion. I don’t plan on going into the law enforcement field as a career, but to me reading about these cases is a wonderful pass time. In the end it’s wonderful to close a brutal and antagonizing case with a capture, it gives the victims an opportunity to get closure, despite it being long overdue, but the old saying goes “Better late than never”.

Interestingly, the article suggests Deangelo may have already confessed to at least being the Visalia ransacker. Like you, I've always been wary of submitting my DNA to those sites as well as I wonder how private my information really is. Although my parents already did that stuff so I pretty much know vicariously through them what my background is anyway (nothing I didn't already know except once again that family rumor of native American ancestry (which I was always skeptical of anyway) turned out to be false- which seems to always be the case lol).

Also, Deangelo is said to have had a wife and children. That doesn't surprise me however as BTK did as well. (Although in this case I believe Deangelo's children are adults).
