This is the photo that was thought to be from the meeting where a man challenged the EAR/ONS/GSK, although some seem to dispute that fact. Either way, this man was identified by sleuths as almost everyone there was a couple, or groups of single females. This guy looks like he was there on his own. In my opinion if the EAR/ONS/GSK was present he would have been standing in the back where he could see everyone present and make a quick exit if needed. Sitting up front or in the middle of the group just doesn't seem right. Thoughts?

It would make more sense for him to stand in the back but then again him being right in the front and/or center of the action despite being by himself would probably fit in with his seeming brazenness.

Great to hear. This case is solvable, particularly with all this publicity of late.

There was a Crime Watch Daily update a few days ago, of course this is the one my dvr chose to malfunction on, and I haven't gotten a chance to watch via their website or YouTube yet but here is what the updates are, copying and pasting from the posters on the EAR/ONS exclusive proboards site (and no sense of competition here, they do a great job and hope they help solve the case!): "They discussed the Chinaware dishes he stole from attack #37 (or #38 depending on your count of the crimes). Moreover, they spoke about the 2001 phone call he made to his 14th victim "At the 1:18 mark there was a 1982 phone call from him to a victim at her place of work, this throws the incarceration theory in doubt. At 2:12 they show quilted covers/holders for the china that was taken, this answers the question as to how someone(singular) could have made off with something that would seemingly be awkward to deal with." earonsgsk.proboards.com/thread/4996/crime-watch-daily-segment-2017m.youtube.com/watch?v=M-U3HhIwVD8m.youtube.com/watch?v=NaeIJefSAX0

Tonight at 9 PM ET on HLN will be the debut of the aforementioned docuseries called "Unmasking A Killer". Once again, there will be five episodes in total.

Finished first three episodes of "Unmasking A Killer" and pretty good show so far. The forensic investigator, Paul Holes, wants to stress to viewers not to get too focused with the sketches (although imo they are likely accurate especially since one was from a man shot by the Golden State Killer), as he wants everyone who thinks they have a suspicious feeling about someone to call in the tip no matter what they looked at.
They also mentioned how the antiquated technology in catching the man then known as the East Area Rapist helped paved the way for the advanced DNA testing and forensics and even the central 911 system that we have today. (People back in the 70's in Sacramento would still have to dial an operator).
Also, the Golden State Killer (I changed the thread title since this is his pretty much official moniker now) is believed to have called and taunted a victim in 2001.
So we know as of 17 years ago he was still alive, so that's really not that long for him to have passed away.

Finally finished the series. Pretty good! They mention on the last episode that before the East Area Rapist struck Sacramento there was a burglar called the "Visalia Ransacker" that although not proven many feel may be the same man as the EAR/ONS/GSK killer- he would break into homes in Visalia, California stealing only small and insignificant items. His crimes got a lot more serious when he attempted to abduct a female victim only to be confronted by her father, who he shot to death. After that incident, there was no more ransacking robberies in Visalia and the Sacramento-area rapes would begin just a few months later. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visalia_RansackerThey also say familial DNA may finally be what solves the case. There is also talk of seeing if they can get a match through "private DNA companies" but there are legality issues with that. (I am assuming that they are referring to companies like Ancestry.com and 23andme.com). They can attempt to request if there's reason to believe of a significant threat to the public?as there is in this case) and they hinted that this is how they solved the Grim Sleeper case. Of course, the problem with DNA and those sites is the legal issues and the slippery slope if even one case is applied.

Suspect in custody... Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, a former police officer in Auburn CA was arrested in Ventura County, CA and booked on 2 counts of murder so far in Sacramento CA. DNA match. The Mr. Cruel Aussie killer might not be the same guy, but the recent rehashing of the Golden State Killer case might have played a role in the arrest.

This is incredible! I had faith he could be caught one day but I wasn't expecting TODAY!
Makes sense if he was a former law enforcement officer- would explain how he was able to break into so many homes and not be caught until today.
Also press conference in under an hour at 3 PM ET on HLN!

Article about the late Michelle McNamara, the true crime writer whose book on the GSK (and who helped coined the name Golden State Killer), helped reignite public interest in the case: www.sacbee.com/entertainment/books/article209784529.htmlAnd link to Patton Oswalt's twitter commenting on the case today and saying his wife did in fact help solve the case: twitter.com/pattonoswalt?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5EauthorAnd I would agree that at the very least Michele McNamara played a huge role in reigniting the publicity and interest in the EAR/ONS/Golden State Killer case, who for some reason was up until a few years ago the worst serial killer no one had ever heard of (at least outside of California). Of course that is no longer the case. I know it must be bittersweet for him since she's not alive to celebrate with him, but I also know how proud he must be and how he can at least take some solace that her work was not in vain.

Watching the press conference. Obviously, DNA played a key role, and also surveillance on DeAngelo's house. I'm a bit frustrated they didn't say how they came across DeAngelo (I know DNA identified him obviously, but was it because of a recent arrest, tip? etc...) but it's still surreal in a good way to see. What they did say it was only in the last 6 days they began investigating Deangelo. Here are earlier photos of Deangelo as a younger man in the 70's (photo credits: heavy.com): Also, here is a photo of DeAngelo today at age 72 (photo credit: KTXL California):
