A man accused of killing a 2-year-old girl is still on the run nearly a week and a half after the child's death.
The Colorado Springs Police Department is looking for 23-year-old Kevin Diaz, accusing him of child abuse resulting in death.
On Sept. 6, authorities say Diaz was taking care of 2-year-old Maddilynn Hernandez while her mother worked. That afternoon, Diaz allegedly called Patricia McCarthy at work to let her know that Maddilynn had slipped and fallen in the tub.
According to the arrest affidavit, 24-year-old McCarthy returned home, and after finding her daughter unconscious called police.
When police arrived at The Parc at Briargate apartments, located on the 8100 block of Summerset, they reported finding a visibly upset McCarthy and the little girl lying unconscious on the floor. The arrest papers say the toddler had bruises all over her body and trauma to her head. She was transported to the hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
Both Diaz and McCarthy were questioned by police.
While being questioned, police say Diaz admitted to pushing the 2-year-old into a bathtub "around 10 times" trying to clean her after she had allegedly soiled herself numerous times. He is now facing serious charges.
"He is facing child abuse resulting in death charges, which is a class 2 felony. He is also looking at a half-million dollar bond for the charges he's facing," a spokesperson with the Colorado Springs Police Department said.
In photos, Maddilynn appears to be a happy child, but a daycare worker tells us she noticed signs of abuse since May and had been reporting it.
Daycare workers say they made several attempts to contact the Department of Human Services before the child's tragic death.
"We are not able to release any history we may or may not have with the family without a release from the family to be able to do so," a spokesperson with the Department of Human Services said.
People close to the toddler say they will miss the little girl that brought so much joy to their life.
Admin Note #1: According to online articles: Diaz is 5-foot-10 and 136 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. If you have information about this case, or know the whereabouts of Kevin Diaz, you're asked to call police at 719-444-7000; or you may call Pikes Peak Area Crime Stoppers, Inc. at 719-634-STOP (7867); you do not have to give your name and could earn a cash reward.
Thoughts? We see cases like this way too often where someone taking care of a child gets impatient and winds up killing him or her. I don't care how much or little experience Diaz has had with taking care of a baby, infants and/or toddlers should be obviously delicate to anyone who has to handle one. You can't show frustration or take your anger out that way. Now a little girl's life is lost and a family is devastated because Diaz admittedly couldn't control himself. This is a completely unnecessary tragedy.
It should also be noted this case was also reported in El Paso media. Authorities aren't saying if he might be there, but for some reason wanted to alert that media market about the case.
