On Wednesday, October 9th,2013, Paris, Texas police received a call of a shooting and someone bleeding inside a residence. When police arrived at the home, they walked in on a still unsolved quadruple homicide.
Police identified the victims as 18-year-old Romello Dewain Steward, 21-year-old Devante Laray Akins, and 24-year-old Brijonne Rashad Woods, all from Paris. Additionally, 32-year-old Billy Charles Carey, of Garland, Texas, was identified as a victim.
Investigators said there were two other unnamed men in the house at some point during the evening. Police interviewed one of the men, while the second was arrested on an unrelated charge. However, at the moment neither have been charged in connection to the quadruple homicide.
Despite community rallies to bring attention, the case would go unsolved up to the one-year anniversary in October of 2014. The community felt police were not doing enough involving the quadruple murder and other homicides involving African-Americans in the community. The Police Chief defended his department in articles, saying they have Detectives dedicated to solving the quadruple homicide, and Texas Rangers were there the same night. He cites a lack of witnesses as a challenge in the case.
Around that anniversary when a bit of a break happened in the case involving a 25-year old man named Byron Anthony McCuin who was sentenced to prison for 22-years on drug charges.
McCuin testified in court that he and Billy Carey, one of four men murdered, would divide and package cocaine at 435 N.E. 6th St., which is where the murders happened.
McCuin went on to say he was at the home the night of the killings, but left to deliver cocaine and returned to find the men dead. McCuin said he left the house to hide from police because he knew he had warrants out for his arrest.
Although police did not call him a suspect, he was believed to be someone who could provide valuable information.
Thoughts? No matter what did or didn't go on in that house, none of those men deserved to be murdered. I am also not taking sides, but it's unfortunate that this case also seems to have a bit of controversy in the police and community relations. All I know is I have hope this case can be still be solved, and hopefully someone with information comes forward. If anyone does have information, call that Crime Stoppers line at the top of the page, it's an anonymous tip line where you don't have to give your name to talk.
