GREENVILLE, S.C. —Authorities say a man suspected of abducting and killing a couple found inside their burned-out car in Ohio last month committed armed robberies in three states with two accomplices, including South Carolina, over the weekend.
Robert Roy Clark, 29, is wanted on a murder charge in the deaths of Doyle and Lillian Chumney in Strasburg.
The couple was reported missing Jan. 21, and their bodies were found the next day. The couple's home had been ransacked.
Authorities said Clark and his accomplices were also involved in robberies in West Virginia and Georgia over the weekend.
Anderson County Sheriff’s Office investigators reviewed videos from the 7-Eleven robbery on Smith Point Road on Sunday and the West Virginia robberies, and said that the suspects are the same.
In the Anderson County robbery, two men came into the store. One showed a sawed-off shotgun and the other a pistol. The men told the clerk to open the cash register and give them the money, the report said. The police report said one of the men leaned over the counter and got about $100. The clerk said the other man went around the counter and into the office and tried to break into a large cabinet but was unsuccessful. The man then took several packs of cigarettes and left the store. Both men left the area in a dark in color minivan, the report said.
A second suspect in the Chumneys' killings was arrested Saturday. Police said 21-year-old Jeffery Stewart implicated Clark in the slayings. Police said Clark should be considered armed and dangerous.
Clark is also wanted on armed robbery charges, as are Jeffrey Caley, 28, and Tabatha Marie Hazel, 26.
Investigators said they believe that Hazel is traveling with Clark and Caley. They said she has been seen in store videos prior to the robberies and apparently acts as a look-out for the men.
Anderson County Sheriff John Skipper said, "We are currently working with authorities in West Virginia, Ohio and Georgia.
It looks like these three traveled to Georgia after they left our jurisdiction and were involved in another armed robbery in Donalsonville.
