It's time for yet another one of my (in)famous AMW episode guides! This time, I'm backtracking a bit to cover a year that I initially skipped over; 2002. This was the first year I began watching AMW and the year that made me a lifelong fan of the show. However, I didn't start with this season because I haven't seen every episode from 2002; I began watching the show regularly on March 30, 2002, which gives me almost three months worth of episodes I haven't seen.
But since I'm now done with the 2004 guide, I decided to go back and visit the episodes from 2002, since it's not fair for me to neglect them. There were some really good episodes during this time!
I'm starting off with the March and April episodes, as I've only seen one March episode and there were only three episodes in April.
Episode #670 - March 30, 2002 (Strange But True Special Edition)
Manuel Tarango (COPS Credits) - Leader of a robbery crew in Las Vegas who targeted a bar. What they didn't realize is that most of the people in the bar that night were off-duty police officers; even the band was made up of cops! A shootout ensued, and one suspect was killed, but Tarango got away. He was indirectly captured in June 2004.
Antonio Delacruz (Full segment) - Houston fugitive wanted for stabbing a man to death during a drug transaction. He led officers on a high-speed chase before getting stuck in a ditch. In a bizarre getaway attempt, Delacruz poured gasoline on his body and set himself on fire. He survived, but bonded out and disappeared. Delacruz was captured in December 2006.
David Veal (Full segment) - Jail escapee who literally starved himself to elude justice. Veal charge, squeezed through a hole no bigger than a cinderblock, made it to the roof of the jail and got away. He allegedly killed his neighbor after his wife, whom he was having an affair with, asked Veal to kill him. AMW tips located Veal in Arizona in August 2002, making him Capture #719.
(commercial break)
Dudley Forbes (Full segment) - Canadian fugitive wanted for shooting up a nightclub in Toronto in an attempt to kill his ex-girlfriend. She survived, but two innocent people were killed in the chaos. After Forbes' 1997 profile, AMW got a tip from a travel agent in Rhode Island saying she thought Forbes was one of her customers; he asked for a one-way ticket to London without having to fly to Canada and looked identical to Forbes. The man led officers on a high-speed chase through downtown Providence before finally getting caught; oddly, it wasn't Forbes, but it was a Canadian fugitive wanted for murder. Forbes himself was caught indirectly in May 2004.
(commercial break)
Stanley Obas (All-Points Bulletin) - Wanted out of Easton, Pennsylvania for his role in the torture and murder of a 13-year-old girl. Obas and two others believed the victim had stolen their drugs and money. The suspects were linked to the crime after a piece of chewing gum was found next to the victim's body and it perfectly matched the teeth of one of the suspects. Obas' accomplices were caught, but he got away. Still at large.
Clifford Graham (All-Points Bulletin) - Fotomat founder wanted for scamming over 300 investors in a gold scheme. Graham claimed he discovered a process that could turn sand into gold. When the investors gave him money, he was actually funneling it into his private accounts. After this was discovered, Graham fled. Still at large
Martha Gomez (All-Points Bulletin) - Texas fugitive wanted for raping several teenage girls. However, Gomez would commit the crimes while posing as a 16-year-old boy named Emilio Garrison. Detectives finally figured her out when they went to question Garrison and realized that Gomez looked exactly like the picture of him. Gomez bonded out and disappeared. AMW tips led to her capture in October 2003, making her Capture #764.

AMW's Strangest Captures (Full segment) - To go along with the show's theme of "Strange But True," some of the strangest captures in the show's history are highlighted. They include Amy DeChant (hid out in a nudist colony while a fugitive), John List (captured after 18 years on the run thanks to an age-enhanced bust that was a perfect match), Jesse Baker (fugitive murderer found in jail under an alias), Scott Smithson (identified by a tipster after the actor in the reenactment said the phrase "Sweet Home Alabama," which is something the real fugitive said all the time), Adrian Rosales (captured after he sent an email to HBO offering to sell his life story to them), Kenneth Lovci (caught while working as a cook at a restaurant where the previous cook had been murdered; his case aired right before Lovci's) and Asgar Ali (hiding out as a cook, where he actually cooked John Walsh's food).
(commercial break)
Holli Thibodeaux (Break-Four Tease) - 12-year-old girl who had been kidnapped in Louisiana while walking with a friend. Her body was found the day of the profile, as was that of her killer's. He committed suicide shortly after killing her.
(commercial break continues)
Unknown Connie Warner & Randi Mebruer Killer (Full segment) - In Zachary, Louisiana, police were hunting a possible serial killer. Two women had been abducteed and murdered from their own homes. Connie Warner was killed in the mid-90s and Randi Mebruer, whose body was never found, vanished around 1998. Police belived an unknown man who attacked two teenagers in a cemetery may have been responsible. After serial killer Derrick Lee was arrested, DNA linked him to Randi Mebruer's murder, and he remains a suspect in Connie Warner's death, but has not been linked to it.
Episode notes:
- This episode was filmed in the AMW Studio.
- This is the last of Forbes' profiles to both name his ex-girlfriend and to feature a clip from her interview with AMW. After this point, the profile simply calls her "Forbes' girlfriend" and never shows her face again. I'm guessing she contacted AMW and asked that they stop using her image.
- This episode would later be reran in August 2002.
Episode #671 - April 6, 2002 (Bad Girls Special Edition)
Jenny Liang (COPS Credits) - Las Vegas blackjack dealer wanted for killing her boyfriend while he slept. Liang is described as being very jealous and possessive and was once accused of assaulting her ex-husband when he asked for a divorce.
Crystal Vigil (Full segment) - Pat Lalama heads to Los Angeles to discuss a violent gang of women that has been terrorizing the streets. They shot one man simply because he said "hello" after recognizing one of the women, and were accused of killing a cab driver during a botched robbery. Two of the women had already been nabbed, but Crystal Vigil was still at large. AMW tips led to her capture in July 2005, making her Capture #851.
Elaine Parent (Full segment) - Career con artist wanted for passport fraud. Known as "The Chameleon," Parent was an expert at stealing peoples' identities and assuming their lives. But in the early 90s, Beverly McGowan, whom Parent was living with, disappeared and was later found brutally murdered. Parent resurfaced in England posing as Beverly. Police desperately wanted to question Parent about Beverly's murder, but they never got the chance to. The night of this profile, a woman recognized Parent as one of her neighbors and called police. When officers went to question the woman, she pulled out a gun and committed suicide. Fingerprints confirmed it was in fact Parent, making her Capture #702.

Luis Gonzales (Brief, approx. 1 minute, 30 seconds) - Tom Morris reports on a breaking story out of New York; the murder of NYPD Detective Jaime Betancourt. He was off-duty when his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend, Luis Gonzales, came barging into the apartment and started arguing with her. When the detective tried to intervene, Gonzales stabbed him and fled. Within days, Gonzales was located in Florida after detectives followed the route of bus he fled New York on.
Ashley Pond and Miranda Gaddis (Full segment) - Two young girls from Oregon who lived in the same apartment complex disappeared just a month apart from each other. Ashley Pond was reported missing in January and Miranda Gaddis disappeared in March. At the time of this update, investigators were using police dogs to help in the search, but they were unsuccessful. Ashley and Miranda's bodies were found buried in the backyard of their neighbor, a convicted sex offender, in August 2002.
(commercial break)
Vickie Nash (All-Points Bulletin) - Houston fugitive wanted for a double-murder back in the 70s. Nash allegedly shot and killed her ex-boyfriend and his new lover after finding them in bed together. Still at large
Hazel Head (All-Points Bulletin) - Wanted out of Louisiana for killing her boyfriend. Head apparently snuck up behind him and shot him. She has been married to 10 different men at 10 different times and is also suspected of setting another ex's house on fire to collect on the insurance. Still at large
Sophie David (All-Points Bulletin) - Ethiopian woman who shot and killed her boyfriend in the middle of the street. David, known to be possessive, thought he was cheating on her because she found a woman's phone number in his jacket. Still at large
(commercial break)
Robert Pickton Capture (Full segment) - Three years after AMW profiled the mysterious disappearance of dozens of Canadian prostitutes, there's been a major break in the case. Robert "Willie" Pickton, a pig farmer, was arrested in connection with some of the disappearances after investigators went back and revisited old tips in the case. They came across one from a prostitute who said Pickton assaulted her at his farm, and once they investigated they found the evidence. AMW asked viewers for help in the prosecution of Pickton, who I believe was later convicted.
(commercial break)
Tari Ramirez (Break-Four Tease) - Wanted out of California for the murder of his ex-girlfriend. Ramirez was captured sometime between 2011-2013. His capture was never reported by amw.com
(commercial break)
Tamara and Barbara Dolinska Capture and Jan Jablonski (Full segment) - John Turchin travels to Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, to feature two police officers as they try to nab a gang of bandits AMW had been featuring since 1996. Sisters Tamara and Barbara Dolinska were wanted for committing home break-ins and Jan Jablonski was their getaway driver. Barbara Dolinska was arrested in 1999, and thanks to the two Palm Beach Gardens officers, Tamara Dolinska was arrested after a 2002 burglary. Jablonski was the only one still at large. He was captured sometime in 2003 or 2004, but I don't know the circumstances since his capture report was never added to amw.com.
Episode notes:
- This episode was filmed in the AMW Studio.
- This is the last time Pat Lalama appeared on AMW as a correspondent. She moved on to becoming an "investigative" reporter for some of those daytime Hollywood gossip shows (they're all the same to me )
- Charlotte Cowan, one of Elaine Parent's victims, shows her face in this interview, but on "The Investigators," a Court TV show that was produced after this episode, she was interviewed in silhouette, though they did use her real name. It was never stated exactly why Charlotte didn't want to be seen on the newer documentary.
- Although Luis Gonzales' profile is clearly breaking news, it's never declared as such.
- It's not stated on this show, but on the following week's episode, it's explained the reason Detective Jaime Betancourt's photo is never shown is because he was an undercover narcotics detective.
- At the time this episode aired, I remember I took the case of Ashley Pond and Miranda Gaddis personally. I was the same age as them (Miranda was 13, Ashley was almost 13) and I remember being legitimately upset when their bodies were found. I think it was the first time I realized that terrible things can happen to people my age.
- This was the last profile of Sophie David to mention that she tried framing her husband for assaulting her. Every profile after this simply goes from the line "she was used to getting what she wanted" to "when her marriage fell apart, she set her sights on a new man."
Episode #672 - April 13, 2002
Robert Foster (COPS Credits) - Brooklyn fugitive wanted for killing his girlfriend, then cutting up her body and throwing her in the river. Foster was indirectly captured in 2003 after assaulting another girlfriend.
Luis Gonzales Capture (Full segment) - Rick Segall travels to Florida to report on the capture of cop killer Luis Gonzales. The suspect allegedly stabbed an off-duty narcotics detective during an argument with his ex-girlfriend. After the murder, Gonzales fled New York City on a Greyhound all the way to Miami. Officers tracked down the cabbie who drove him from the bus station and nabbed him as he was returning to his hotel room.
Garfield Brown (Full segment) - Tom Morris reports on fugitive Garfield Brown, wanted for committing two murders in two different states. Brown, a former bodyguard for LL Cool J, shot and killed a man in New York City who apparently had a disagreement with Brown. The fugitive then traveled to New Haven, Connecticut, where he shot a family man from Nebraska who was out of town on a work trip. Brown killed the man after the victim gave him a ride. After his profile, a tipster called AMW saying he had just spotted Brown. But when officers arrived, Brown pulled out a gun and got into a shootout with them. Brown was killed during the gunfire battle. He was Capture #709.
TJ Weber (Breaking news, approx. 3 minutes) - Ed Miller discusses an ongoing manhunt in Las Vegas for suspected killer TJ Weber. An ex-con, Weber allegedly raped the 14-year-old daughter of his girlfriend. When the girl's mother and brother came home during the assault, Weber allegedly beat both of them and tied them up, killing both of them. Weber left the home and while he was gone, the girl was saved by her other brother. Weber would later return to the crime scene before an AMW tip led to his arrest, making him Capture #701.
(commercial break)
Stephen Anderson (Full segment) - John Turchin heads to Kentucky to report on a violent fugitive investigators believed could become the next Timotohy McVeigh. Stephen Anderson, a Ku Klux Klan member and anti-government activist, allegedly shot at a sheriff's deputy who tried pulling him over for a minor traffic violation. The deputy survived, but Anderson fled. When deputies searched Anderson's property, they found an arsenal of weapons and ammunition. An AMW tip led to Anderson's arrest in November 2002, making him Capture #732.
(commercial break)
Eddie Mathis (All-Points Bulletin) - Staten Island fugitive wanted for gunning down two people with a machine gun in their own home. Mathis, who was a member of the US Marshals' 15 Most Wanted List, was located in Detroit in 2003 thanks to AMW tips, but when police went to arrest him, he pulled out a gun. Officers shot him dead as a result of his actions. Mathis was Capture #758.
Unknown Barbara Kriewald Killer (All-Points Bulletin) - Police in Georgia are seeking the unknown man who shot and killed pregnant sports bar owner Barbara Kriewald and paralyzed the bar's assistant manager during a robbery. Barbara's unborn baby girl died as a result of the shooting. In this update, the lead investigator reveals that police discovered footage of a similar-looking man in the bar earlier in the evening and said police wanted to question him. He has never been located and the case is still unsolved.
Unknown Sheriff Dwight Woodrell Killer (All-Points Bulletin) - While out investigating a call, Pawnee County, Oklahoma Sheriff Dwight Woodrell was gunned down. Responding deputies thought Woodrell would survive, but he later died at a hospital. Police believed their suspect may have been named "Robert Weller," because Woodrell asked dispatch to run that name before he was killed. In 2004, James Taylor and Justin Walker were arrested and charged with the sheriff's murder. Their capture reports never appeared on amw.com
(commercial break)
Unknown Chief Joe White Killer (Brief, approx. 1 minute) - Investigators were seeking information on the unsolved July 2000 murder of Rich Square, North Carolina Police Chief Joe White. The chief had been shot in the temple and was found laying outside of his patrol car. In April 2003, Jason Hebert was arrested and charged with the chief's murder.
Bablu Hassan (Full segment) - New York fugitive wanted for the stabbing death of his girlfriend, Chastity Adams. The victim's five-year-old daughter saw her mom being attacked and tried to stop Hassan, but he slashed her across the stomach. She survived with minor injuries, but her mother died after falling into a coma. Hassan is still at large.
(commercial break)
Vinicio Martinez (Break-Four Tease) - Wanted for killing in a teenager during a drive-by shooting in Colorado. Still at large.
(commercial break continues)
Cassandra Washington Capture and Leonard Seals, Bryan Ayers & Ronald Hines (Full segment) - An AMW tipster helped Louisiana police solve a Jane Doe case; investigators found a body burned beyond recognition inside of a car. They had no way of identifying the woman, but after a description of the Jane Doe was printed in the local paper, an investigator received a call from an AMW tipster saying that description matched Cassandra Washington, a murder suspect from Texas who AMW profiled in February. DNA confirmed the body was in fact Washington. Since AMW's last profile, Washington's accomplices in the murder were identified as Leonard Seals, Bryan Ayers and Ronald Hines. They were also sought for questioning in Washington's murder. Seals and Ayers were captured in May 2002, while Hines was caught in September 2002.
Episode notes:
- This episode was filmed in New York City.
- Every correspondent reports on a story in this episode. I'm unsure if Pat Lalama had officially left the show yet or not because I recorded over the credits of my copy of the episode.
- Pulaski County, Kentucky, Sheriff Sam Catron, who was prominently featured in the Stephen Anderson story, was gunned down the very night of this show. Tipsters called in saying Anderson should be investigated as the killer, but it turns out the killer was actually a political opponent of Catron's. AMW would update viewers on this tragic news the following week.
- Interesting note about the Sheriff Woodrell murder; the deputy who responded to the call to back up the sheriff, Don Sweger, was later elected Woodrell's successor.
- John Walsh makes a reference to Bablu Hassan being his #1 Most Wanted Fugitive of 2000 after his profile. His exact quote is, "The last time we were in New York City, I named Bablu Hassan my most wanted fugitive of the year." There's one problem with that though; AMW was in New York after 9/11, which was clearly between Hassan's previous profile in December 2000 and this one.
Episode #673 - April 20, 2002
Raymond Tudor (COPS Credits) - Convicted murderer wanted for escaping from a prison in Canada. Investigators believed Tudor may have shaved off his distinctive beard. But oddly, Tudor never technically escaped; he was found a month later after a guard heard a mysterious noise coming from a storage room. Tudor apparently was hiding out in the prison's ductwork and being fed by his fellow inmates.
Unknown Tom Wales Killer (Full segment) - Ed Miller reports on the unsolved murder of assistant federal prosecutor Tom Wales, who was shot and killed while working on his computer in his own home. Wales, a prominent gun control activist, was believed to have been killed because of his lobbying for that cause. Still unsolved
TJ Weber (Full segment) - John Turchin features an astounding update on accused killer TJ Weber; he had returned to commit another brutal assault. Weber, accused of killing his girlfriend and her son, as well as raping her 14-year-old daughter, attacked his girlfriend's other son and a family friend when they returned to the house to get clothes for the funeral. Weber beat both with a baseball bat before the family friend escaped and tried to run over Weber with a pickup truck, but Weber fled. He was captured about two weeks later thanks to an AMW tipster, making him Capture #701.

Brenda Andrew and James Pavatt Capture (Full segment) - A "sinful" church-going couple accused of murder has finally been captured. In Oklahoma, Sunday School teacher Brenda Andrew allegedly arranged the murder of her husband, Rob Andrew, who she wanted dead so she could collect on the insurance and so she could gain full custody of their children. The murder itself was committed by James Pavatt, a church member who Andrew was having an affair with (he also happened to be Rob Andrew's insurance agent). The pair were caught at the U.S./Mexico border when they tried coming back into the country. Andrew's children, Tricity and Parker, were safely recovered as well.
(commercial break)
Shannon Melendi (Full segment) - Police in Georgia were seeking information on the presumed murder of Emory University student Shannon Melendi. The young woman disappeared in 1994 after working as a scorekeeper for the Softball Country Club. Police long suspected Colvin "Butch" Hinton, an umpire at the country club, had killed Shannon; he had a long criminal record which included sex offenses against women. At the time of this airing, Hinton was in prison for 10 years because he tried burning down his house for insurance purposes. Though Shannon's body has never been found, police charged Hinton with her murder in 2004 and he was later convicted. Hinton later allegedly told a jailhouse informant that he killed Shannon and had her body incinerated.
(commercial break)
Stephen Anderson (Brief, approx. 1 minute) - Following the profile of Stephen Anderson on the previous week's show, AMW received a number of tips suggesting that Anderson killed Sam Catron, the sheriff of Pulaski County, Kentucky, who was featured prominently in the profile. Sheriff Catron was killed just before last week's show went to air, and many believed Anderson commited the crime. It turns out Anderson had no involvement in the shooting, but he was still a fugitive. AMW tips led to Anderson's capture in November 2002, making him Capture #732.
Rodolfo "Rudy" Gutierrez (Full segment) - Wanted out of Riverside, California for a brutal assault on his ex-girlfriend. Gutierrez, who had a restraining order with his ex, begged her to take him back and when she said no, he began slashing and stabbing her. The attack left her vocal chords permanently damaged, but she survived the assault. Gutierrez fled and is still at large.
(commercial break)
Gerbert Menendez-Orellana (Break-Four Tease) - Wanted for raping a woman in 2000. Still at large.
(commercial break continues)
Kathie Harless Capture (Full segment) - With AMW being one capture away from Capture #700, the story behind Capture #699 is detailed. Kathie Harless was wanted out of Kentucky for drowning her newborn baby boy in an outhouse toilet. The body was found after the septic tank was drained. DNA linked Harless, who had previously gotten in trouble for letting her children live in deplorable conditions, to the crime, but she fled before she could be arrested. After AMW aired her case, they got a solid tip that she was hiding out in Florida. Sure enough, that's exactly where she was, and she was arrested without incident.
Episode notes:
- This episode was filmed in Washington, D.C.
- If TJ Weber had not been caught, there's no doubt in my mind that he would have been John Walsh's #1 Fugitive of 2002. John Walsh said so himself in this episode, telling the audience Weber was "at the top of my list of creeps I want to see caught the most."
- Brenda Andrew was later sentenced to death, making her one of the very few women in this country on death row.
- Shannon Melendi's case is similar to that of Ran Mesika in that everybody involved was going on the assumption that the missing person was dead and the show was asking for information on where her body could be found or anything that could help in Hinton's prosecution.
- Michael Bliss, AMW's 700th capture, had already been arrested by the time the show aired, which probably explains why John Walsh was so confident about the next show being their 700th capture celebration. My dad actually guessed this when I first saw the episode. I was watching it with him and he said, "They probably already caught the guy." Turns out my dad was right! And no, I have no explanation as to why the capture counter is so screwed up around this time.
Next month on AMW:
May 4, 2002 (700th Capture Special Edition)
- It's time to celebrate! AMW has hit its milestone 700th capture, which also happened to be one of the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives. Hear the story of how Michael Bliss went down!
- While it's time to celebrate, there's also work that needs to be done, including tracking down a millionaire fugitive who thinks he's gotten away with murder. Watch as Rick Segall travels to paradise to track down James Sullivan, accused of ordering a hit on his wife so he wouldn't have to lose money in a divorce settlement.
- What celebration would be complete without people saying nice things? AMW brings back some of their most memorable faces from law enforcement, tipsters and victims to talk about their experiences with the show and how it had a positive impact on their lives.
May 11, 2002 (Cops Under Fire Special Edition)
- John Walsh heads to Broward County, Florida to ride along with their fugitive task force as they hunt some of their most wanted fugitives.
- One fugitive Florida cops would love to nab is Jesus Maldonado. During a home invasion robbery, Maldonado allegedly shot at a responding police officer, hitting him in his bulletproof vest. Thankfully the officer survived (he actually didn't even realize he'd been hit) but Maldonado is still out there.
- The LAPD is seeking justice for one of their own. Last week, Deputy David March was gunned down by attempted murder suspect Armando Garcia, and now he's on the run. Watch as investigators go door to door to track down a cop killer.
May 18, 2002
- John Walsh teams up with U.S. Customs in Florida as they not only try to nab drug smugglers, but also as they try to track down James Springette, the newest member of the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List. The leader of the Island Boys, Springette allegedly escaped from jail by being snuck out with a mattress.
- U.S. Customs Agents also want Guillermo Del Prado for trafficking drugs. He and several other suspects led agents on a high-speed boat chase in south Florida before fleeing on land. Del Prado was the only suspect to get away.
- Tom Morris spends the week in Washington, D.C. to remember fallen law enforcement officers during National Police Week. On this episode, Tom focuses on one family who lost two children - a police officer and a firefighter - on 9/11.
May 25, 2002
- It's Missing Children's Day, and John Walsh teams up with NASCAR to celebrate the unveiling of a new car that will feature photos of missing children. One of those children is Samantha Kibalo, who was abducted by her own mother during a visitation earlier in the year.
- The disappearance of Chandra Levy is now a murder investigation after her body was discovered in Maryland earlier in the week. Now, John Walsh asks viewers to think back one year to try and solve this case for not only Chandra, but her family as well.
- Tom Morris catches up with Bizzy Bone, member of hip hop group Bone Thugz N Harmony, who was saved thanks to the made-for-TV movie "Adam." Bizzy Bone, whose real name is Bryon McCane, was abducted by his stepfather and abused while on the run. Hear a side of this celebrity you may never have hard, and listen to his song "A.M.W.," a tribute he wrote to John Walsh and all the abused and abducted children across the world.
I'll do my best to have the May episodes uploaded within a couple days.

Dudley Forbes (Full segment) - Canadian fugitive wanted for shooting up a nightclub in Toronto in an attempt to kill his ex-girlfriend. She survived, but two innocent people were killed in the chaos.

Ashley and Miranda's bodies were found buried in the backyard of their neighbor, a convicted sex offender, in August 2002.

Tari Ramirez (Break-Four Tease) - Wanted out of California for the murder of his ex-girlfriend. Ramirez was captured sometime between 2011-2013. His capture was never reported by amw.com

Unknown Chief Joe White Killer (Brief, approx. 1 minute) - Investigators were seeking information on the unsolved July 2000 murder of Rich Square, North Carolina Police Chief Joe White.
