I figured this was worthy of a separate thread- even though we've alluded to it in other threads- since I fear now with America's Most Wanted coming back on the air, it might turn into a competition over which show is better or watch this show but not that. Not by us, since we're all mature here, but elsewhere online.
These are shows about getting justice for the victims' and shouldn't be turned into a competiton.
When AMW was cancelled and The Hunt came back, I still clamored for the need for AMW as a show IN ADDITION to The Hunt to come back, because simply put, The Hunt was only 8 episodes a season with only 1 or 2 cases a show. However, The Hunt was groundbreaking in that it introduced the concept of delving deeper into these fugitive cases, when AMW was less detailed mainly because they had to be- they were a faster paced breaking news show that covered more cases. The Hunt as more of a general true crime show had more time to be relaxed and detailed.
Many of us thought The Hunt was a noble attempt but missed the mark somewhat- they dragged on cases a little too long in some cases- and it was weird seeing John Walsh talk in a warehouse for 5 minutes rather than having his trademark narration and voice. This is where In Pursuit expanded and so far has been even better than the Hunt- it is more along the lines of classic AMW- at least two cases an episode- and 15 seconds of shame fugitive segments and brief missing child segments.
However, In Pursuit is also 12 episodes a season, which while better than The Hunt (both in quality of the show and amount of episodes), leaves a gap the rest of the year.
This is where ANW comes in and fills a void and we now have the best of both worlds- AMW as the breaking news fast paced fugitive show and In Pursuit to go more in-depth on the fugitive cases that may have been on AMW earlier in the year (not a knock on AMW, they have to leave details out sometimes since they have less time to tell their cases) and new cases as well that didn't get a chance to be on AMW.
Unsolved Mysteries- even if it was more of an overall entertainment show was more of a competitor to AMW in my opinion since it was on NBC while AMW was on Fox. In Pursuit is a cable show which is not a technical direct competitor with Fox.
Yeah there may be some stuff that happens like let's say for example- Eugene Palmer gets caught- he was aired on both AMW and In Pursuit- so it may be tricky there- are both shows going to take credit, ignore giving the other shoe credit etc... (AMW and Unsolved Mysteries never wanted to credit each other- but once again they were more direct competitors and I think even aired on the same night at one point).
And yeah John Walsh is and always be my hero. And Callahan is excellent as well. But they're now on the ID channel. It's entirely possibly even if they wanted to- they wouldn't have been allowed to host AMW since usually when you sign a contract with a network- you sign to be exclusive to them.
So now we have Elizabeth Vargas hosting and still seeing stubborn "no JW I'm not watching comments" when you can still see JW on ID!
After the first episode of AMW 2.0, the majority of the forum gave the show positive reviews. Some of us may have liked this aspect better than the other, or had respectful minor disagreements over some of the stuff the show introduced! (some of us may have liked the new technology or use of tweets better than others, for example) but there was two things we ALL agreed on- A) We don't like Nancy Grace (LOL) and B) Elizabeth Vargas did an excellent job!
I don't mean this as any disrespect to my hero JW any way, just that just as him and Cal do an excellent job on ID, Vargas has done an excellent job so far on AMW. So I would like those "no JW I'm not watching" people to give her a chance. This is about getting justice for the victims', and we need more eyeballs to do so.
Sorry if this seems like a long roundabout post that could have been explained in a single sentence but I guess what I'm trying to say in conclusion is that we should look at AMW and In Pursuit as two different types of fugitive shows that serve as perfect compliments to each other where one show's weakness or inability to do something is the other show's strength and vice versa. This isn't a competition, let's enjoy both shows. We've actually never had this kind of setup before, even when AMW 1.0 was on the air. For the first time pretty much ever, we can have our cake and eat it too!
