Update- Maura's case now an FBI ViCAP case
HAVERHILL, N.H. —
Federal investigators are sending out a nationwide alert in the hopes of solving the mystery surrounding a Massachusetts woman who vanished in a New Hampshire town nearly 18 years ago.
The FBI has created a Violent Criminal Apprehension Profile for Maura Murray, a 21-year-old who disappeared on Feb. 9, 2004, after crashing her car into a snowbank on Route 112 in Haverhill, New Hampshire — specifically the North Haverhill portion of the town.
Murray was a graduate of Whitman-Hanson Regional High School and was studying nursing at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst at the time of her disappearance.
Family and friends say they still have no idea why Murray was in the area of Haverhill, New Hampshire, when she went missing.
"It's a long time, but it also seems like it was just yesterday," Julie Murray, Maura Murray's sister, told WMUR while recalling when Maura first went missing.
There have been other potential leads in Maura Murray's case recently. Authorities found bone fragments at the base of Loon Mountain in September 2021, but the remains were not identified as belonging to Maura Murray.
"We have had a lot of instances where we got our hopes up, thinking that we were finally closer to some answers, only to be let down. So we're pretty resilient in that regard," Julie Murray said.
The FBI's new profile will allow multiple law enforcement agencies to share information regarding Maura Murray's case.
