Back on June 3rd, 1997,Jack Volgares grew angry with his stepdaughter Seleana Gamble and threw her down the hallway so hard she suffered a head injury and lost consciousness.
And while she slowly died from the injuries she suffered Jack did nothing to help her and neither did the one person who should have protected her,her own mother Mona Volgares.
When Seleana finally died,Mona didn't turn Jack in.
Instead she helped him put her daughter in a trash can and bury her in the back yard and lied to relatives who asked about her whereabouts.
And when the story they gave to relatives about Seleana visiting her biological father in Florida started to fall apart, they went on the run and were long gone by the time Seleana's body was found on September 7.
Two weeks later on September 20,1997,John Walsh would name them Public Enemy #1 and 29 minutes later before the show was even over, they were in custody as AMW captures 484/485,the fastest captures ever for the show.
When all was said and done,Jack was given 37 years to life for murder and won't have his first parole hearing until 2035 when he's 80.
Mona was given 25 years for involuntary manslaughter and abuse of a corpse among other things with a release date of 2022.
Evidently she didn't want to wait that long as she tried to apply for early release earlier this year, stating among other things she realizes now that she was in an abusive relationship and should have protected her children better and that she's sorry.
Domestic violence is a horrible thing and victims of it shouldn't be judged but IMO,Mona wasn't a victim of domestic violence.
She was a selfish person who needed a man in her life and if it came at the expense of her children,so be it.
The judge hearing the case thought the same thing and found her "apology" to be hollow and too little too late.
He denied her request saying it would diminish the seriousness of what was done to let let her out early and kudos to him for doing so.
In 2022,three years from now Mona will have a second chance at life at 53 with plenty of life left to live.
Seleana Gamble, the daughter she let die to protect her husband won't.
