From Go San Angelo:
SAN ANGELO – A man was killed and set on fire six months ago in San Angelo, and the investigation has come to a halt after the suspect fled to Mexico.
On July 2, 2018, New Mexico native Miguel Mendez, 59, was discovered dead at the Arden Ridge Apartments in the 3800 block of Arden Road. The apartment was on fire when police and firefighters arrived.
Mendez was worked construction in the area and shared the residence with several coworkers. He was found with 18 head injuries, according to the autopsy report.
Through investigation, police determined 35-year-old Mexican national Sergio Eduardo Coyac-Aguilar killed Mendez and set the fire to destroy evidence, according to an Aug. 15, 2018 news release.
Coyac-Aguilar worked with Mendez and was using false identification, according to the news release. He is suspected of fleeing to Mexico, causing the investigation to stall.
Mexico citizens can be extradited through a treaty, but the process can take months and involves the district attorney presenting an evidence-based extradition case to the Department of Justice. If the Department of Justice approves the request for extradition, the case is sent to a Mexico federal judge who will rule on whether a warrant should be issued.
If a Mexico judge issues a warrant, the suspect is arrested and they are granted hearings in Mexico courts to request asylum or argue they are not the suspect sought in the warrant, among other challenges.
"It is a lengthy process through the Department of Justice in coordination with the Mexican Consulate, U.S. Marshals Service, and our (district attorney)," said Officer Tracy Gonzalez, public information officer for the San Angelo Police Department.
Anyone with information on Coyac-Aguilar's whereabouts is asked to contact the San Angelo Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division at 325-657-4264.

Thoughts? I am assuming Coyac-Aguilar is still at large as of this posting date (March 5th, 2019) since the above article is from this past January. However, if anyone has any updates/proof-of-updates one way or the other, they are always more than welcome to let us know. It is unclear as to the believed motive for why Coyac-Aguilar allegedly killed his co-worker (Miguel Mendez) but this is a brutal murder nevertheless. We've seen Mexico and the U.S. a lot more cooperative lately when it comes to extradition but usually they need things like the exact address (or at least town or village) the suspect is living in. That is why public tips are so crucial in a case like this. Despite all the talk in the news about Mexico and immigration etc... what's most important here is getting justice for Miguel Mendez.
