Rufus Byers was featured on AMW's 2-hour sex trafficking special on Lifetime in February of 2012. He was accused of forcing a woman (who AMW called "Morgan" to hide her identity) into sex trafficking in California, and holding her 3-year old daughter hostage as collateral. AMW tips led to Byers' arrest in Dallas, making him direct capture #1176. AMW also filmed Byers' flight back to justice, with Morgan confronting him on camera. He has now been sentenced to 7 1/2 years/ krqe.com/2014/02/10/man-headed-to-prison-for-human-trafficking/

Did Byers pled guilty or does human trafficking only carry a 7 1/2 year sentence in New Mexico?

I'm not sure. 7 1/2 years may seem relatively light, but other AMW sex-traffickers such as Leland Reed received even lighter sentences (I believe he received 2 years).
Although it's likely not a new thing, public awareness of sex trafficking seems like only a recent phenomenon, so perhaps the penalties are still not harsher just yet.
I would have guessed at least 10 years for him, so perhaps he pleaded down.

Also this is really off-topic but I'm rolling my eyes at that "Obama's son" comment from one of the posters on the article. It seems like EVERY TIME I read an internet article about a black captured fugitive I will see an "Obama's son" or "Probably an Obama voter" comment.
And then of course if it's a Hispanic fugitive, there will be comments automatically assuming he's an illegal and saying to send him back to Mexico even if he was actually born in the U.S. (Miguel Torres was born in Brooklyn I think but every time AMW profiled him on Facebook someone would make an illegal comment).
I wish these people who try to make "funny" racist comments could at least be original.

Sorry for so many comments from me, but I googled and found a Facebook comment that claims Byers was found guilty on three charges and it only took the jury 30 minutes. I know it's a Facebook poster and not a news source, but they must have heard it somewhere:

Contrary to what some believe, most Hispanics in the US were born in the US, therefore they are American.

They never aired full Capture segement of her.
