Manuel Nunez-Luna is the last planned non-AMW fugitive I will post about this year. Usually when a parent is wanted for the death of their child, it's because of abuse or deliberate murder. The reason why this crime is so tragic is because of how careless and preventable it was.
On August 23rd of this year, Nunez-Luna was driving a 1996 Ford Explorer at the intersection of Highway 119 and Highway 52 in Colorado when he traveled through a red light, swerved to avoid cross traffic, and rolled his vehicle. His 7-year old son, Vicente, was allegedly riding unrestrained in the cargo area of the SUV and ejected from the vechicle. He was later pronounced dead at Boulder Community Hospital.
According to reports, there were six other passengers in vehicle, including Nunez-Luna's wife, and four other children ages 5-15. (At least one other child was also allegedly not wearing a seat belt).
Investigators would later state alcohol played a role in the crash, and charged Nunez-Luna with DUI, vehicular homicide, and child abuse resulting in death. He was initially arrested but released as state troopers continued their investigation, and apparently fled during that time.
Believe it or not, Nunez-Luna was in the trouble with the law for a very similar situation years ago:
In April 2009, Nunez-Luna was arrested in Roswell, N.M., and charged with driving under the influence and with abandonment/abuse of a child. He later pleaded no contest to those charges, according to New Mexico court records.
As a result of that crime, he was labeled a habitual offender, Boulder County in 2006, when Nunez-Luna pleaded guilty to theft of between $500 and $15,000. (Nunez-Luna also plead guilty to two other theft charges in 2006 and 2007). He received a deferred jail sentence, which was revoked in 2010. He was then sentenced to 18 months of probation, with 90 days of electronic monitoring.
This guy is a danger in the road, and his own child was killed as a result of his alleged intoxication. One article states he has traffic violations dating back to 1988, so it's important that he is caught to answer charges.
According to articles, authorities believe Nunez-Luna is either hiding in California with friends or still in Colorado. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Trooper Rob Madden at (303) 239-4501
