From KRCA (NBC 3 Sacramento):
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KCRA) —
It's been more than 37 years since Robin Brooks was found murdered in her apartment's bedroom, and the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department is still looking for the person responsible.
Around midnight on April 24, 1980, Robin had just gotten off work at the Donut Time in Sacramento. Later that day, she never showed up for her 4 p.m. shift. Her co-workers dropped by her apartment and knocked on her door, but got no response. They got the apartment manager to break down the door and found Robin murdered in her bedroom.
“She had only been in the Sacramento area a few months before she was raped and murdered in the Rancho Cordova area,” retired Sacramento County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Michaela Links said.
One key piece of information -- the killer's DNA -- was found on Brooks, investigators said.
"There was some blood left at the scene and there was also semen," Sgt. Paul Belli, of the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department, said.
The Sheriff’s Department was able to collect DNA from the scene and create a full DNA profile of the suspect. The DNA profile has been in the national and state databases for years, Links said. The Sheriff's Department has also done testing on the suspect's possible relatives – and no matches.
“We have eliminated, as far as we can tell, just about everybody she ever knew while in Sacramento and then people that didn’t live around here that she knew from New York,” Links said.
In the past few years, new details have emerged about the night Brooks was murdered. The Sheriff’s Department learned from a tip that Brooks attended a party near her home, instead of going straight home like earlier thought.
"We believe she was at a party that same evening with Hiram Johnson High School students and they may say, 'Hey, I knew someone with that hair color or skin tone like that,' or something along those lines," Belli said.
The Sheriff's Department hopes someone who attended the party saw Brooks or someone with whom she may have left the party with. They also hope someone at the party recognizes the Phenotype sketches of the suspect.
Despite the fact that the murder happened nearly 40 years ago, the Sheriff's Department hopes to solve the crime.
“There’s going to be a lot of times where you won’t be able to arrest or take someone to trial on these, but just to have the mindset, who the perpetrator was, is significant,” Links said.
For now, officers will continue to work the tips until they identify a suspect in Brooks' murder.
“Even if we don’t solve the case, if it's sitting on the shelf, I can say at least we have done everything we can possibly do with it at this point and that’s kind of where we are at,” Links said. “I have hopes that we will solve some of these.”
