Ashley Freeman (left) and Lauria Bible (right) have been missing since late December 1999. They were profiled on America's Most Wanted in early 2000.
Lauria was staying the night over at Ashley's house to celebrate Ashley's birthday. After the group went out to eat, they ran into Ashley's boyfriend, who gave her her present. They all went back to Ashley's home and the boyfriend claimed when he left later that night, there didn't seem to be any problems.
At 6 in the morning the next day, a passing motorist saw the Freeman's residence on fire. Authorities, while shifting through the debris, discovered Ashley's mother, Kathy, shot to death. Ashley's father, Danny, as well as Ashley and Lauria, were nowhere to be found. Authorities believed that Danny had killed Kathy and abducted the two girls. Lauria's car and purse were still at the residence. The next day, the Bible's went through the house to look for evidence when they discovered Danny's body covered under debris. He too had been shot to death. The two girls have never been found.
The Freeman family was clearly dysfunctional. Danny Freeman was constantly unemployed, and the Freeman household was a rundown trailer with no running water. He would grow marijuana plants near the home for his own use, and it was rumored he was involved in trafficking. He was also said to have a violent temper. A decade earlier, he had been arrested for assaulting his father-in-law, and a year before the murders, he was arrested for abusing his son Shane. Danny claimed the charges were overblown, despite the fact that Shane was bleeding and bruised. He was acquitted of the charges, but only after the jury were instructed that they couldn't order him to counseling. Shane was also another problem. The family was ordered to counseling after Shane stole his uncle's truck. In early 1999, the Bible family filed a complaint with authorities, claiming Shane had broken into their house and stole, among other things, Lauria's money and belongings, as well as several of the family's firearms.
Not long after the complaint was filed, Shane was shot and killed by a police officer. The officer, David Hayes, claimed he encountered Shane, who was in possession of a stolen car that had broken down. Hayes claimed Shane reached for a gun when approached. The shooting was ruled justifiable. Several members of the Freeman family believed that Shane was fleeing from Hayes, and were preparing to file a wrongful death suit. They also claimed the police department were harassing and intimidating them, parking outside their residence. This occurred after Danny allegedly threatened the lives of not only David Hayes, but also his brother, another police officer.
There are several theories regarding the murders and the girls disappearances:
1. Some alleged that the police were involved. This is due to their alleged harassment of the Freeman family after Shane's death. Motive could be due to the threat of a lawsuit being filed. However, the Hayes' brothers, as well as other law enforcement officers took and passed polygraphs. Furthermore, they willing took themselves out of the investigation, taking away any chance of them deliberately messing the case up.
2. There were rumors that Danny was involved in drug trafficking, and that the murders were drug-related. Shortly before, Danny had kicked out two people who had arrived at his home. It's possible they were dealers that Danny owed. The theory is that they arrived at the house, killed the couple, took what they could, and abducted the two girls and later killed them, disposing their bodies. The problem with this theory is that Danny, if he was dealing, was not big time. The family lived in a dump, so I doubt, if he was dealing, that it was in the amounts that someone would kill an entire family over. True, worse things have happened, but for some reason, I don't see that being the case here.
3. There was some speculation that Ashley had murdered her parents and took Lauria with her. Authorities disclosed that there were rumors that someone, possibly Danny, had sexually abused Ashley in the past, but there was no evidence. Also, according to Ashley's boyfriend, she had saved up a couple thousand dollars for a car. The money was contained in a tupperware container, and there was no evidence of the container or the money found. However, some discount this theory by stating that all the vehicles were still at the home. Not only that, but friends and family describe both girls as well-behaved. Some say, due to their age at the time, as well as the length of time passed, that it's unlikely they committed the murders. That's not always the case though. Brian Martin and Shane Magan were both 16 (the girl's age) at the time of their crimes, and they're still on the run. However, I do not believe the girls committed the murders.
4. Jeremy Brian Jones, a suspected serial killer, is considered a suspect in the case. He allegedly confessed to the murders, and claimed he threw the girls' bodies down a mine shaft in Kansas; he later recanted his confession. Not only that, he apparently knew the murder weapon used, a fact that had not been released by the police. The crimes also match his M.O.; a woman he allegedly killed was shot and then set on fire. However, he was arrested shortly before the fire at the house was set. That being said, it's possible he was involved.
