APPLETON (WLUK) — A shooting early Saturday morning at this home in Appleton, left 42-year-old Jose Gil-Leon dead, and neighbors stunned.
"My children interacted with their kids, family, so for me it's unfortunate to see this happen to that family," said Melissa Ludin of Appleton
Gil-Leon was shot in the back.
He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The suspects are not in custody, but were charged Monday.
Jorge Luis Zendejas-Cano is charged with first degree intentional homicide.
Miguel Zendejas-Cano is facing multiple counts, including aggravated battery and disorderly conduct.
Police believe the two are brothers.
"Based on our investigation, we feel that we can now call them suspects," Sergeant Dave Lund of the Appleton Police Department said
The shooting happened around 2:45 a.m. Saturday at 159 Foster Court, where the two lived.
According to the criminal complaint, Miguel Zendejas-Cano and Gil-Leon got into a fight just outside Gil-Leon's home.
When things got physical, Gil-Leon 's 24 year old daughter, Lidia Gil, tried to intervene.
That's when Miguel punched her in the head and shoved her to the ground.
The complaint goes on to say, Miguel left the house, but returned with Jorge Luis Zendejas-Cano, who police say shot Gil-Leon.
Sergeant Dave Lund with the Appleton Police Department, says the two suspects may no longer be in the country.
"As of Sunday, we were notified by federal authorities that the vehicle had crossed a border crossing in Laredo Texas into Mexico," said Lund.
According to the criminal complaint, Jorge and Miguel Zendejas-Cano are originally from Mexico.
Lund says it's too early in the investigation to talk about a motive.
Melissa Ludin, who was Gil-Leon's neighbor, said she didn't hear anything during the time of the incident early Saturday morning.
"They have been nice quiet neighbors," said Ludin, "I've never had any issues, I think they're nice people."
Meanwhile, police are looking for Alejandro Cano, 20, who they think was at the house at the time of the shooting and was a witness.
Anyone with information is asked to call Sgt. Chad Probst at (920) 832-5536. Anonymous tips may be left by sending a text message to 274637 with the keyword APDTIPS at the beginning of the message.
Thoughts? I checked the Wisconsin criminal court online search website and Jorge and Miguel are still listed on there as "filed only- warrant issued" so this means they are still at large as of this posting date (9/2/2017). Also, I couldn't find Alejandro Cano but he was only being sought as a witness so that's probably why. I have no idea if he was ever located or not and for some reason the article wouldn't let me copy and paste the photo of him but here's a link to his photo on that article: fox11online.com/news/local/fox-cities/gallery/name-of-appleton-shooting-victims-released-witness-sought#photo-2
