NEW ORLEANS —
What was supposed to be a day of fun activities, celebrating the end of the school year, turned deadly for one New Orleans teen.
It was a day full of festivity. Seniors marking their graduation with a party at Pontchartrain Park. But soon after the fun began, the fireworks turned to gunshots leaving 16-year-old Ke'Shawn Bell dead.
"I do believe that people know who it was he walked off with because there were a lot of people that attended that Senior Skip Day," Ikeisha Bell said. "There were a lot of children at that park."
Ikeisha Bell said her son went to the party with two friends on March 21, 2013. She said several people saw him walk away with two young men, possibly in their teens, the last time he was seen alive, leaving his mother with a hole in her heart.
"I can't described it," Ikeisha Bell said.
New Orleans Police Department detective Richard Chambers believes that Ke'Shawn Bell knew his killers and trusted them enough to walk away with them.
"There (were) a lot of people at the park, witnesses at the park when he left," Chambers said. "And the neighbors in the area overheard gunshots, two or three gunshots."
Chambers said one neighbor said he looked over his fence and saw no one fleeing, another neighbor came out the front of their home and also didn't seen anyone running. He believes it's possible the suspects hopped over the nearby tracks and made their escape, avoiding any contact with people.
He said the violence happening among young people stems from them not knowing how to resolve issues peacefully, impacting more than just their intended victims.
"Now the young men are resulting in picking up weapons and shooting each other and taking lives and not only hurting the victim's family, but also hurting their family," Chambers said. "At the end of the day, at some point, you will get caught."
And Ikeisha Bell hopes that happens soon. She hasn't given up hope that the people who killed her son will be found.
"They know that they're wrong," Ikeisha Bell said. "You killed someone, come forward, turn yourself in."
Anyone with information that can help solve this murder is asked to call Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111 or the New Orleans Cold Case Division at 504-658-5300.
