An Atlantic County grand jury has indicted an Absecon man on vehicular homicide charges in a 2011 crash that killed his girlfriend. The suspect has remained a fugitive since the accident.
Victor Hernandez-Salgado, 30, was indicted on charges of second-degree vehicular homicide, third-degree assault by auto and third-degree endangering an injured victim, acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain said.
The accident occurred at 2:21 a.m. Aug. 7, when authorities said Hernandez-Salgado was driving while intoxicated and crashed his vehicle into a taxi on the Black Horse Pike in Egg Harbor Township. Hernandez-Salgado’s car came to a rest in dense marshland.
Hernandez-Salgado’s girlfriend, Mayelin Perez, 32, of Pleasantville, was ejected from the vehicle, but Hernandez-Salgado and another male passenger in the car did not notify police, authorities said.
Perez’s family told Egg Harbor Township police the next day that she was missing and she was found alive but suffering from severe head injuries two days after the accident. She was taken to a hospital, where she died Aug. 18.
Criminal charges were first filed in October 2011 but Hernandez-Salgado remains a fugitive.
According to press release, anyone with information as to his whereabouts is asked to contact Sgt. Kevin Hincks of the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office at 609-909-7667 or Officer Paul Weldon of the Egg Harbor Township Police Department at 609-927-5200.
