Dennis Lilly is wanted for escaping from prison where he was serving time for assault, theft, and other charges related to previous escapes. Lilly was first arrested back in 1975, and was sentenced to 5 years for burglary and theft. Only three days into his sentence, he and four accomplices used pieces of pipes from their cells and used it to bore a hole through a brick wall that led to the courthouse next door. Once through the wall, they smashed through a skylight into the courthouse, and fled through the front doors. Lilly was caught two weeks later. Lilly was sent to Kansas State Penitentiary, and in 1977, he escaped again by stealing a prison truck. He was caught three weeks later. In 1981, Lilly stole a prison guards uniform and fooled another guard into letting him into the control tower, where he and six other inmates overtook it. They walked out one gate, and climbed two fences to escape. Lilly was arrested hours later after getting into a shootout with police, where he shot one officer, injuring him. After that escape, Lilly was transferred to Missouri State Penitentiary. He made every attempt to escape, but was always captured. But in 1986, Lilly was able to acquire a guard's uniform by stealing it one piece at a time, until he had the whole thing. Then he fashioned a dummy head made out of toilet paper, painted it flesh color, and pasted his own hair on top of it. During shift change, he calmly walked out wearing the guard uniform. In 2001, an AMW viewer reported that Lilly was living on a small Mexican island near Puerto Vallarta, teaching parasailing. Investigators determined it was Lilly after they showed his picture around, and found out he was even using his real name. However, Lilly was able to flee before they could arrest him. Where do you guys think he is at now? My guess is that he's probably living near some Mexican resort, although he's probably wised up and has an alias. He was living with his wife and a daughter who'd be in her late 20's or early 30's today. I doubt the daughters still living with them, so if they found her, they could maybe figure out where he's living. Thoughts?

We finally have a cold case fugitive who we can all agree is most likely alive! lol. I think he's probably out in Latin America and perhaps still teaching parasailing somewhere.

The old AMW website mentioned that after the 2001 Mexico sighting, further tips pointed to Canada and Ireland. If he managed to get to Mexico after his fourth prison escape, it wouldn't be improbable for him to flee to another nation. What he would be doing in those two countries I have no clue.

Wasn't aware of those tips. Not sure about Canada, but as someone who is part-Irish, I know Lilly is a common Irish last name, so perhaps he's going back to his roots.

Authorities believe they have finally caught up with Dennis Lilly. And well- we were sort of right Lilly was likely still alive- until two years ago that is. It turns out Lilly was likely living in Gold Bar (a city in the state of Washington, according to Wikipedia) under the alias Dave Murray. It also turns out he's likely dead. His wife says he died from pancreatic cancer in 2012. It seems he was buried in the backyard of their house. The medical examiner has not officially confirmed the identity and cause of death just yet, so I won't move Lilly to the captures section yet just to err on the side of caution. But it looks like after all the cold case fugitives we speculated were dead, the one guy we thought was alive wasn't! heraldnet.com/article/20140123/NEWS01/140129606/%26%238216Most-Wanted%26%238217-for-decades-escapee-dies-in-Gold-Bar

That was taken from the article. I believe this is the first time that this forum has actually gotten attention in a newspaper article! Anyway this is very surprising. If this turns out actually be Dennis Lilly, then this casts doubt on the sighting of him in Mexico in 2001. Amanda Murray aka Mary Lily bought their property in 1993 according to the article.

I was more than willing to bet that he was still alive, guess not. This does make me wonder about the alleged sighting in Mexico, since he was allegedly using his real name. That may mean that there's someone using the name Dennis Lilly out there. Kind of a risk, if you ask me. Then again, I remember hearing that someone was caught using Donald Webb's social security number, purely coincidental.

In fairness to us, he didn't die (assuming the autopsy confirms it) until 2012 which is still pretty recent.

I'm moving Lilly to the captures section, since just about every internet article and now national media articles (many of which also mention our site! And the Daily Mail which is international!) are saying he's dead. The wife admitted to burying him, the cops say it's him. I know the autopsy hasn't erased the 0.1 percent of 99.9 likelihood but still. And if the AP isn't erring on the side of caution, I may as well just go ahead with it. If AMW can say Roy Parmley's dead before the official autopsy confirmation, so can this tiny site of armchair sleuths (said lovingly) for another fugitive damnit!

Congrats on your notoriety! Dave wasn't teaching parasailing I can verify that. Also, he was way too smart to cross a border although he could have if needed so he never went out of the country. Dave's favorite saying was "Give it to me straight don't bull me" imagine the irony in that! Dave and Amanda were/are awesome friends and great folk. Dave was even business partners with a prison counselor not mentioned in any article although I am sure that will come out in a movie.
He was in AMW 16 37 but I can't seem to find a clip anywhere. Do you know where I can view it? Thanks, and if you have questions about him ask away. No I never knew he was a fugitive it was quite the shock to find out!!

Hey Wildman, thank you for explaining beforehand about why you wanted to post. LOL I actually feel bad looking back at how excited I seemed initially. I wasn't excited to see he was dead, but rather I found it cool for the site to be mentioned. It seems like Lilly became a model citizen post-escape and him and his wife were well-liked, and he helped others. This of course leaves a question of morality- in that- did Dennis/Dave make up for his past life in the person he became before his death? Or should he still have paid for his criminal past? I'm sure people have weighed on both sides of that issue and it is an interesting moral dilemma for debate. I guess that would have been for a judge to decide had he been caught before his death. Or for God to decide based on one's religious views. Unfortunately, I cannot find an AMW clip anywhere at the moment. I hope another member knows more than me but if not I'm sure there will eventually be a Dateline special at the very least that will show snippets, if not a movie as you said. This is a pretty crazy story. I guess I only have one question right now- if you had seen Lilly on AMW, would you have recognized him? Or had he drastically changed his appearance?

Life moves you have to move with it- When I saw his mug shot I said to myself "I don't know it could be" I pulled up a picture of him and compared them side by side, and I mean an older picture of him from mid 90's. They bared resemblance but that was it. I know Dave though and the other history added more things together. Anyway yeah he really did change.
Most those charges were tacked on by authorities due to his escapes, remember he was only initially doing time for burglary and theft. My thoughts on that are he needed to make ends meet and stole stuff from a job site only to get caught.
Robbery, probably stole a key from the guard at the tower Vehicle theft, stole a truck to escape assault, shot someone escaping You get the picture.
The real soul of the man was pure but he didn't like to be caged!
