From the San Diego Union-Tribune website:
The last time Connie Meza saw her son alive, he was dressed to impress in his signature Michael Jordan sneakers, Acqua di Gio cologne and Guess watch. Sonny Carrillo, 20, stood in the door of his mother’s bedroom, pinkie swore that he would be home later that night and left for a friend’s birthday dinner.
An hour and 37 minutes later, he was dead from a stab wound to the chest.
The July 29 slaying has left Meza desolate, angry and desperate for justice. An arrest warrant for murder has been issued for Julio Cesar Mendez, 21, who authorities say has been on the run ever since. His location is unknown, said San Diego police homicide Lt. Kevin Rooney.
The case will be highlighted Saturday during the 25th annual Light the Night Against Crime 5K Run/Walk, which San Diego County Crime Stoppers hosts in an effort to raise reward money for unsolved crimes.
“This is a good example of a case where an anonymous tip could solve it. This might be the thing that pushes someone to come forward,” said Crime Stoppers Executive Director Sally Cox. “This is what we are raising money for.”
Carrillo never did make it to the birthday dinner that night. Instead, he agreed to do a favor for two female friends by giving them a ride in his BMW. One of the women needed to exchange her child with the suspect, who is the child’s father.
Carrillo waited in the car during the exchange at a Lincoln Park apartment complex at 47th and Castana streets. At one point, Mendez allegedly became angry and asked who was in the car. He then walked to the car and stabbed Carrillo in the chest through the car window, police said.
Carrillo was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly after.
When authorities gave his mother the news the following afternoon at her Spring Valley home, she refused to believe it.
She became so despondent that she was taken to a hospital and sedated for the next 12 days — so much so that she says she doesn’t remember her son’s funeral.
Carrillo was remembered as a mature, considerate young man with dreams to join the Marines. He graduated from Mount Miguel High School in Spring Valley, where he was in the ROTC, and later attended Grossmont College. He faithfully attended Lemon Grove Foursquare Church, where his uncle is pastor.
At the time of his death, he was a parts-delivery employee at Frank Toyota in National City.
He helped provide financial support to his mother, who has lost two husbands to suicide.
Since her son’s death, she has been unable to work and is now being evicted from the home she’s lived in for 15 years due to foreclosure.
She doesn’t know where she will live two weeks from now, but she says she has stopped caring.
“I just want to be with my Sonny,” she sobbed.
She has family members and friends to count on for support, as well as therapy twice a week. Her 26-year-old niece moved from Los Angeles to stay with her.
Meza clings to the few reminders she has left of her son, including a custom-made necklace pendant with his fingerprint and a ring made from his melted gold jewelry that bears his name.
“I miss him dearly,” she said. “I’m barely waking up from this nightmare.”

Thoughts? Mendez seems to unfortunately still be at large according to a San Diego warrants search I did. It doesn't mention his middle name but it's a 187 (code for homicide) warrant from August 31st, 2011, just a month after Sonny Carrillo's murder so I'm thinking it has to be the same guy: apps.sdsheriff.net/WARRANT/waarDetail.aspx?eRECD_NBR=wXLACt0uVOswm%2bRx2j1%2fInNl1gwzg%2fg302UZhE4%2baqrjy%2bqoI8PKLwsYg6ksDjTk
In any case, this was a completely senseless killing based on the alleged motive and I hope if anyone knows the whereabouts of Julio Mendez, they do the right thing and contact San Diego Crime Stoppers. He was very recognizable tattoos which should help with public recognition.
