(Above photo credit: nbcnewyork.com) Authorities in Southampton, New York say that on July 9, 2012, sister Jacqueline Welsh was on a retreat with other nuns. She was walking on a street when she was struck and killed by a car driven by Carlos Ixpec-Chitay. The car was soon located with damage. Carlos is presumed to have fled back to Guatemala where he had illegally immigrated from. A major news story in 2012 and 2013, the last mention of this case in the media was in 2015. Based on wanted location, our advice for anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Carlos Ixpec-Chitay would be ro call the Southampton Police Department at 631-728-5000.
Moderator Note: If you have any news-related updates on this case, please contact us here: amwfans.com/thread/1662/website-contact-form--- Thoughts? I am not 100% certain that Carlos is still wanted but I would say that I am 85% certain since this was such a major story when the crime happened. I would like to reference a resolution at some point to this case's conclusion, so we would appreciate any unreported information. If Carlos is still wanted, then it's going to be a problem extraditing him from Guatemala since he's wanted for vehicular homicide and not murder. www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/long-island-hit-run-nun-killed-police-identify-driver--163235846.htmleasthamptonstar.com/News/2015604/Cops-Driver-Water-Mill-Hit-and-Run-May-Not-Realize-Woman-Was-Struck

Some articles say the driver might not have realized he didn't hit the woman but others say he may have fled back to Guatemala apparently? Assuming he really did know he's a coward. Assuming he didn't, well, he still needs to be located to clear things up.

Newsday.com updated a story about the search for Ixpec-Chitay back in July 2017. It was just to add a short blurb about the writer's crime reporting and the actual article is from 2013, but the fact that they didn't mention any updates leads to me reasonably assume that Ixpec-Chitay was at least still wanted as of July 2017. www.newsday.com/long-island/hunt-on-for-driver-in-crash-that-killed-nun-1.4413797

As far as I can tell, Ixpec-Chitay is still at large as of this update- October 19th, 2019. There is an interesting and potentially controversial article I found from the Daily Kos back in 2014. Apparently some of the wealthy Hamptons owners wanted the road sign honoring sister Jackie taken down because they were tired of having to talk about the tragedy with their guests. It appears the sign was removed after a town vote, which I feel is unfortunate. I actually understand it is uncomfortable to talk about tragedy regardless of one's standing financially in life, but the article mentions other road signs honoring men and women who have passed away, and eventually things fade over time. (Not that sister Jackie didn't deserve to be remembered or it wasn't a tragedy, but it is unfortunately usually true that the more time passes by, the less affected people would be to talk about a tragedy in their town. The opposite is true for those directly affected, the more time goes by, the more affected they may or will be, but in my opinion the owners were being buttheads for a tragedy that would eventually unfortunately fade away from their personal memories over time). m.dailykos.com/stories/2014/8/6/1319380/-Wealthy-Hamptonites-Don-t-Want-to-Remember-Dead-Nun-Because-Tragedies-Are-Boring-and-Stuff
