OAKLAND -- As part of its growing effort to help Oakland police arrest the city's most violent offenders, the FBI has added $25,000 to a reward for information that would solve a two-year-old slaying in North Oakland.
That pushed the reward to $125,000 in the killing of Aya Nakano, a 22-year-old Emeryville man fatally shot after a 2013 fender-bender, authorities announced at a Thursday news conference at Oakland police headquarters.
The FBI joined Oakland police there to ask for the public's help in identifying two people responsible for shooting and killing Nakano.
"This is one of those cases that ... we can't stand for," Oakland homicide Lt. Roland Holmgren said. "We have to keep Aya's memory alive. This young man had the whole world ahead of him."
Maria Climaco, Nakano's mother, stood with several family members and friends at the news conference, where some held signs that read, "Justice for Aya! Peace for Oakland."
"I want nothing more than to keep our streets safe so no other parents have to undergo the tragedy of a loss of a child," Climaco said. "Please, please help us find justice for Aya."
Nakano was gunned down around 11 p.m. on June 12, 2013, about an hour before his 23rd birthday.
He had played basketball at the UC Berkeley recreation center and was returning to his family's Emeryville home when his Jeep Cherokee was rear-ended near a bus stop at Market Street and Stanford Avenue in North Oakland.
er shot him, and he and a passenger sped off south on Market Street in a silver four-door sedan with tinted windows, authorities said.
Since then, Climaco has spent about $50,000 of her savings on advertising space on bus stop benches, billboards and AC Transit buses with messages about the crime and how to contact police.
She and her family also have pledged to pay a significant part of the reward, Climaco said Thursday.
"The money is not only a demonstration of how Aya is beloved, but also a sign of how communities can come together for justice and safety." she said. "We all know gun violence is prevalent in our society."
The FBI and Clear Channel Outdoor partnered on a digital billboard calling attention to the Nakano case, and unveiled it Thursday next to O.Co Coliseum and Interstate 880 in East Oakland.
Oakland police have around 2,000 cold-case killings going back to the 1960s, and have solved homicides at a lower rate than the national average in recent years.
The FBI has begun "broadening its partnership" with Oakland police to help them take the city's most violent criminals off the streets, said Bertram Fairries, FBI assistant special agent in charge.
The two agencies are setting up a work space at Oakland's police administration building that will be devoted to the Nakano case and other major crimes, Fairries said.
The FBI will contribute as many as 10 agents and $110,000 for The Safe Streets Task force, which will add new work stations, furniture and a computer network that will be shared among federal agents and Oakland detectives, according to city documents. Oakland will contribute $63,000 to the project.
"We'll be sharing resources and intelligence to target the most violent crimes and offenders," Fairries said.
Anyone with information about the Nakano case can call Oakland police at 510-238-7950.

Thoughts? In addition to Oakland Police, since this case is also on the FBI.Gov website, you can also call your local FBI Field Office or embassy or the FBI's toll free tip line (1-800-CAL-FBI) in regards to this case. In my addition, this is going to be a tough case to solve since it was an apparent road rage incident- the killer didn't know Aya before that night. (When there's a long-term personal reason, a case is easier to solve). However, maybe the killer bragged about it. Maybe you for some reason have suspicions about a neighbor. Whatever the case is, if you think you know anything that may solve this case, Aya was beloved and deserves justice. Please make that call.
