Peter Chadwick, an Orange County, California multimillionaire charged in the murder of his wife, was featured as part of a 2-segment profile on the December 7th, 2015 episode of the syndicated crime show "Crime Watch Daily."
Around 6:30-7 a.m. on Oct. 9, 2012, a next-door neighbor heard Quee "Q.C." Chadwick screaming inside her multi-million-dollar home on Almanzora in a gated Newport Coast neighborhood. The neighbor did not report it at the time, figuring Quee was momentarily frustrated. (The couple had been arguing over divorce).
About 7 p.m. the following evening, neighbors contacted the Newport Beach Police Department because the Chadwicks' three boys had not been picked up from school that afternoon. A look through the Chadwick home indicated a struggle had taken place, including the discovery of blood. Suspecting foul play, cops launched a search for Peter Chadwick and his 46-year-old wife.
Around 5:30 A.M. the next morning after that, Peter Chadwick contacted San Diego Police by phone to say he needed assistance along the 905 freeway, near Tijuana. He told officers a man murdered his wife and forced him to load her body into his champagne-colored 2003 Lexus SUV. Around 3:30 that same afternoon, a woman's body was found in a dumpster in the East San Diego County community of Lakeside. On Oct. 19, she was positively identified as Quee Chadwick.
Peter Chadwick was arrested, but from behind bars he told Newport Beach Police investigators that a man invited into his home to give an estimate for interior painting murdered Q.C. in their master bathroom. Detectives said at the time they didn't buy it because by then they had caught Peter lying--and caught a glimpse of scratches and bite marks on him consistent with the kind of violent struggle that took place in his Newport Coast home.
Initially held on $1.5 million bail, Chadwick pleaded not guilty at his arraignment, when besides first-degree murder he faced a special circumstances allegation of murder for financial gain that led a judge to have him held without bail.
However, in December 2012, veteran homicide prosecutor Matt Murphy, who was described in OC Weekly's blog as seldom- if ever- losing a case, informed the judge that there was not enough evidence to make the special circumstances allegation stick. Chadwick's bail was lowered to $1 million, and he bailed out. (The reporter for the blog on Chadwick says neighbors were horrified his three children would now be living in him).
On January 16th, 2015, a bench warrant was put out for Chadwick's arrest after he failed to show up in court. His children are now living with relatives, Crime Watch Daily states exactly which relatives have not been disclosed publicly for the boys' safety.
Thoughts? As far as motive, Crime Watch Daily says the relationship was rocky, and that there is suspicion Peter was cheating on Quee and wound up contracting a sexually transmitted disease.
I will say I am astounded Chadwick received bail. One Detective on the show said Chadwick was thought to be a low flight risk because no one thought he'd abandon his three children. And I'm thinking- hello- he ALREADY abandoned his three boys when he wound up near Mexico right after allegedly killing his wife! Not to mention, Chadwick obviously had the money to finance a run. As one blog points out, it's obvious money was a factor here. Men without money accused based on little evidence have to stay in jail years before a trial. Chadwick- who had lots of money- was free despite a case that *appears* to have solid evidence against him.
The Newport Beach P.D. were holding Chadwick's passport and other travel documents to prevent him from leaving the country. I personally feel it's not that hard to obtain phony documents and not to mention Chadwick could have easily driven to Mexico. However, based on those factors, there is a possibility at least Chadwick is still in the U.S. (although my money is on Mexico).
Crime Watch Daily says Chadwick may be receiving help from family members. I will post the Crime Watch Daily link below- the page has both parts 1 and 2 of his airing, along with other relevant links below:
