www.amw.com/missing_persons/case.cfm?id=71481The case of the McStay family is in my opinion, one of the most bizarre missing persons cases to ever appear on AMW. The family, a husband a wife, and two teenage sons, disappeared from their Fallbrook, California home in 2010. Their two dogs were found abandoned and 10,000 were left in the bank. The San Diego Sheriff's Department now believes the McStay family traveled to Mexico on their own free will. As a result, the case is being transferred to the FBI. But this still leaves more questions than answers. Why would a seemingly normal family suddenly vanish without telling anyone, leaving their dogs and money behind? I usually try to take educated guesses on cases, but this one is truly baffling. www.cbs8.com/story/21921195/local-authorities-believe-mcstay-family-is-in-mexicoEDIT: Thread now moved from Missing to Unsolved Case section after discovery of the apparently murdered bodies of the McStay family were found ANYONE WITH ANY INFORMATION ON THIS CASE SHOULD CONTACT THEIR NEAREST FBI OFFICE OR SUBMIT A WEB TIP AT TIPS.FBI.GOVwww.cnn.com/2013/11/15/us/california-bodies-found/

This too baffles me. My guess is that they left on their own accord at first, and maybe later ran into foul play. Any family that just ups and leaves can't not have something about them that's questionable. Don't know what it is, but maybe they weren't the happiest family. Honestly though, I really can't tell in this case.

Wow. So much for "voluntarily leaving for Mexico". What a bizarre but sad story this is turning out to be.

So now that we know what happened (assuming the other two are the other members of the family) a huge questions is to why. Nowhere has it ever been mentioned this family had any enemies. There was no sign of a struggle in the house. I've said this already. I know a lot of us like to play amateur sleuths on here (I don't mean that as an insult as I think we all do a great job), but this is one where I just can't theorize. This really is one of the most baffling cases ever aired on AMW and I hope it gets solved.

Chase Merritt, a close friend and business partner of Joseph McStay and a former person of interest is writing a new book about this case. In it he claims that Summer was poisoning Joseph before the family was murdered and their relationship had major issues. The issue I have with this is that if this was true, then Summer would have likely been responsible for the death of Joseph. However she was found in the shallow grave along with him and their two children. So I personally don't believe anything that Merritt is claiming in this upcoming book is true. And if it is, then why was she in the shallow grave as well? www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2533474/EXCLUSIVE-McStay-family-husband-feared-wife-POISONING-disappeared-dead-desert-claims-explosive-new-book.html

Yeah I mean what does he think she did? Poisoned the family, drove them to the desert, buried them, and then jumped in the grave herself and all the sand happened to magically pile up on top of them after windy days?
Their causes of deaths have not been released. If they ever are, hopefully that can answer a lot of questions.

I'm so sorry I was just about to post it was pushed back to July 1st. It was supposed to air tonight but CNN chose to air an expanded Anderson Cooper about the U.S. Army soldier returned from Afghanistan tonight (which with all due respect I don't understand the need to interrupt an already scheduled show that they advertised and hyped and many people DVR'ed for something that happened a few days ago). This is my fear about AMW (for all essential purposes The Hunt is really a renamed AMW) being on CNN now as I fear more interruptions for unnecessary "breaking" news coverage.

Thanks for letting me know about that. I really hope that a breaking news event does not happen right before The Hunt airs on July 13th.

The McStay update on CNN was interesting.
They mention that Joseph McStay had a child with a previous wife and Chase Merritt is interviewed and claims she was unhappy about and not fond of it, and also says he had warned McStay about being careful as to what he drank. The parents dismiss Summer poisoning Joseph as a possibility- because as we also pointed out- she was in a shallow grave as well.
It seems there were a lot of mistakes made by law enforcement in the case. The house was not declared a crime scene initially. They were convinced the family went to Mexico willingly despite a journalist interviewed pointing out several reasons why it didn't make sense- the car near the border was found at 5:30 and why would they walk to Mexico at nighttime instead of driving. Summer McStay was afraid of Mexico as well according to Joseph's father.
They then mention that everybody including family could be considered possible suspects in the case and no one has been ruled out according to the San Bernandino Sheriff who took over the case. One of those questioned was Joseph's brother Michael.
Michael withdrew money from Joseph's bank account and sold off some of his property weeks after he disappeared. Michael claims that he was worried about the house going into foreclosure and wanted to "liquidate some things" to give him the money. Michael denied having anything to do with the deaths of his brother's family on the show.
The other guy who seems to be most talked about as a possible suspect is Dan Kavanaugh. Kavanaugh managed Joseph's company's website. Kavanugh started withdrawing money from Joseph's business bank accounts right after he disappeared. Kavanaugh claims he had approval to access the funds. By summer 2011 when Joseph was still missing, he had sold Joseph's business to an outside company. Kavanaugh says he was in Hawaii for a month before the McStays disappeared, and the voice-over on CNN says their research has confirmed he was in Hawaii before they disappeared.
The San Bernadino Sheriff says they can't say anything but they did find evidence at the grave site.
I also agreed with the journalist interviewed more than one person had to have committed these murders and the only way it will get solved is if someone talks. And either they were all murdered because even the children could be potential witnesses, or someone had such a hatred for the McStay family that they killed them all.
In my opinion, I think someone hired a group of men to kill the McStay family. I guess the question is who.
